Renegade Nell is worth a look if you want a lively period adventure with comedy, supernatural action and a strong lead performance—not a strictly historical drama. Jennifer Ouellette’s Ars Technica review praises Louisa Harland’s work as Nell and the show’s cast, writing and production. The eight-episode series is listed on Disney+, though availability can vary by region.
What is Renegade Nell about?
Created and written by Sally Wainwright, Renegade Nell is an adventure fantasy set in England in 1705. Nell Jackson returns to her family in Tottenham after war, but a murder accusation forces her to flee with her sisters, Roxy and George. A sprite named Billy Blind gives Nell supernatural fighting abilities, and her life as a highwaywoman draws her into the Earl of Poynton’s plot against Queen Anne.
That premise puts the series between period caper and fantasy adventure: the historical setting supplies its social hierarchy and costumes, while magic and heightened action push it well beyond straight historical drama.
What is the tone—and who is it for?
Ouellette describes the series as “a good old-fashioned swashbuckling adventure that doesn’t take itself too seriously.” Its comedy and supernatural combat sit alongside themes of class injustice and the limits placed on women. In the review’s assessment, those themes inform the story without turning it into a lecture.

#1 Best Overall
- Author: J. R. R. Tolkien.
- Publisher: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt
- Pages: 300
- Publication Date: 2012-09-18
- Edition: 1
That mix is the main point to consider before watching. If you want a grounded, grim account of the period, this is not that show; if you are open to a playful adventure with fantasy elements, its tonal blend is part of the appeal.
Does the cast make it worth watching?
Harland’s Nell is the review’s central strength. Ouellette highlights how Harland handles a physically active, rebellious role while shifting into moments of fear and grief. That range gives the action a character to follow rather than making the show depend on spectacle alone.

Nick Mohammed plays Billy Blind. The ensemble includes Frank Dillane as Charles Devereux, Alice Kremelberg as Sofia Wilmot, Ényì Okoronkwo as Rasselas, Jake Dunn as Thomas Blancheford, Bo Bragason as Roxy Trotter, Florence Keen as George Trotter, Joely Richardson as Lady Eularia Moggerhanger, Adrian Lester as the Earl of Poynton, Pip Torrens as Lord Blancheford, and Craig Parkinson as Sam Trotter. Ouellette also praises the supporting cast, writing, pacing and production values.
How long is the series?
Disney announced eight episodes, each 45 minutes long. Its March 2024 release announcement said all episodes would be available on March 29, 2024. Disney+ currently lists the series; check your local catalog, since availability and age ratings may differ by territory.

Is there a second season?
The April 2024 Ars Technica review reported that director Ben Taylor said a second season was being written, while Disney had not confirmed one at that time. Disney’s current listing and press materials do not establish whether the series has since been renewed, cancelled or entered production, so its present season-two status is unverified.

Renegade Nell is a promising pick for viewers who enjoy comic swashbuckling, fantasy and a spirited central performance. Harland’s work is the strongest reason to try it, while the show’s deliberately playful tone is the clearest reason it may not suit fans seeking solemn historical realism.
