Rahul Gandhi hugged Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the Lok Sabha on 20 July 2018, at the end of his speech in a no-confidence debate. The unexpected gesture—and Modi’s startled response, followed by a handshake—quickly became material for jokes and memes online. “Jaadu ki jhappi” was a playful reference to the magic-hug motif in Munna Bhai MBBS, not an official name for the moment.
Why Rahul Gandhi hugged Narendra Modi in Parliament
The hug came after Gandhi’s speech attacking the government during the Lok Sabha’s no-confidence debate. Scroll described the speech as fiery and the embrace at its close as unexpected. The Parliament Digital Library catalogs the debate on 20 July 2018 and lists both Gandhi and Modi among the members taking part.

Scroll and The Indian Express reported that Modi looked startled, then offered Gandhi a handshake. Gandhi returned to his seat smiling and winked, according to Scroll’s account. The sources establish what happened, but do not establish a definitive private motive for the gesture.

What “jaadu ki jhappi” means
The phrase refers here to the “magic hugs” associated with Sanjay Dutt’s character in the film Munna Bhai MBBS. Scroll connected the reference to a post by Dhruv Rathee, who has a popular YouTube show. It is a cultural nickname for Gandhi’s embrace, not a formal title for it.
As quoted by Scroll, Rathee wrote: “Rahul Gandhi’s #JaaduKiJhappi will go down in history. It is an epic gesture in times when hate, trolling, mob lynchings, communal polarization have become a common thing in the country.”

What Twitter users joked about
Scroll highlighted several kinds of humor prompted by the scene. Some posts played on Modi’s startled reaction; one used the caption “he’s just not that into you.” Others riffed on political theatre, Modi’s public image as a hugger, or Gandhi’s wink after returning to his seat.
These are examples selected by Scroll, not a measure of the overall response. The report does not give a count of posts or show that the jokes represented Twitter users as a whole. The documented reactions show how the physical comedy and political setting offered different angles for meme-makers, rather than proving a single agreed interpretation of the hug.
