What happened: NBC hired McDaniel, then reversed course
On March 22, 2024, NBC announced that McDaniel would contribute commentary across its platforms. The network said her insider perspective on the Republican Party and Donald Trump would be useful ahead of the 2024 election. The Associated Press reported the announcement came about two weeks after she stepped down as RNC chair. (AP, March 22)
The appointment quickly became a public dispute inside NBC and MSNBC. Former Meet the Press moderator Chuck Todd and several MSNBC personalities questioned the hire, focusing on McDaniel’s credibility in light of her role and statements concerning false claims about the 2020 election. On March 25, Maddow said on her weekly program that she found putting McDaniel on the payroll “inexplicable” and hoped NBC would reconsider. (AP, March 25)
NBC ended the contributor arrangement on March 26, less than a week after announcing it. NBCUniversal News Group chairman Cesar Conde said the appointment undermined newsroom cohesion and alignment, apologized to employees who felt let down, and reiterated the organization’s commitment to seeking voices from across the political spectrum. Why Maddow called the hiring “inexplicable”
Maddow’s objection centered on credibility and institutional trust, not a blanket rejection of conservative commentators. AP reported that she compared hiring McDaniel to putting a mobster in a district attorney’s office—a pointed analogy conveying her view that the appointment conflicted with the newsroom’s responsibilities. Maddow also argued that admitting a mistake is a sign of strength, not weakness. Those were Maddow’s judgments, not a neutral finding about McDaniel’s motives or the network’s standards. Other critics made a related distinction: a newsroom can include people with different political views while still assessing whether a specific prospective commentator’s conduct and public record support viewers’ trust. Coverage of the backlash described concerns that hiring McDaniel could lend NBC’s authority to someone associated with election-fraud claims and attacks on journalists. Those criticisms should be understood as arguments made by network personalities and reported by the press, rather than as a claim that every conservative voice is unsuitable. Why McDaniel’s Meet the Press interview became part of the debate
On March 24, McDaniel appeared on Meet the Press with moderator Kristen Welker. Asked why she had not spoken earlier about Donald Trump’s position on defendants charged in connection with January 6, McDaniel said, “When you’re the RNC chair you kind of take one for the whole team, right? Now I get to be a little bit more myself, right? This is what I believe.” She also said she did not think people who committed violent acts on January 6 should be freed. (CNN transcript, March 24)
The exchange sharpened the credibility question for critics: if McDaniel’s earlier public stance reflected her party role, how should viewers assess the statements she made after leaving it? Her explanation is part of the record, but the interview does not establish her private motives. It gave critics a concrete reason to ask whether the new contributor role would offer reliable analysis or simply a changed public presentation.

Conde’s explanation and the on-air criticism were distinct parts of the reversal. After NBC ended the arrangement on March 26, Conde said the appointment undermined newsroom cohesion and alignment. He acknowledged responsibility for approving it and apologized to employees who felt let down. The episode was unusual because the objections came openly from within the same news organization that had announced the contributor role. NBC’s reversal settled the immediate question of whether McDaniel would work as an NBC contributor: the arrangement ended on March 26, 2024. The controversy’s broader question—how networks balance ideological range, insider access and trust in their commentators—remains a matter of editorial judgment.
