That emphasis fits Ram Charan’s description of the film’s center. Speaking in an Associated Press interview published January 14, 2023, he said, “I personally feel it was more about the brotherhood than the nationalism or the patriotism in the film.” The film’s scale may be national and mythic, but its most legible feelings are personal: admiration, loyalty, betrayal and the cost of choosing a cause.
Do the action and “Naatu Naatu” earn their scale?
Rajamouli treats action as heightened spectacle rather than restrained realism. Set pieces are designed to escalate, with physical feats and crowded confrontations pushed well beyond ordinary plausibility. That approach is central to the film’s pleasure: the action is meant to astonish, not to suggest a documentary account of what these historical figures did.

“Naatu Naatu” is the clearest expression of the same maximalist instinct. Its dance sequence turns a contest into a display of precision, stamina and shared showmanship. The number is a tonal departure, but it also makes the film’s central friendship visible through movement: the two men compete, synchronize and command the room together.
The song won the Golden Globe for Best Original Song, as reported by the Associated Press in January 2023, and the Oscar for Best Original Song at the 95th Academy Awards in 2023. That Oscar recognized the song; it was not an award for an international feature submission.

Do the tonal shifts make a cohesive film?
RRR moves among action, melodrama, comedy, romance and musical spectacle without seeking the smooth tonal consistency of a grounded historical drama. The shifts can be read as part of its all-in entertainment style: each mode gives the friendship a different register, from comic ease to emotional rupture. They can also make the film feel overstuffed, especially when a scene’s emotional beat is followed by another grand escalation.
Whether that mix works depends on what a viewer wants from the film. If the appeal is an epic that continually changes gears and raises the stakes, its excess is the point. If a viewer prefers a tighter historical drama or a more restrained treatment of its characters, the swings may feel less like variety than interruption.
