RPX is Regal’s premium auditorium experience; IMAX is a separate branded presentation system with multiple theatre and projection configurations. The best choice depends on the specific auditorium, the version of the film being shown, your seating preferences, and the local ticket price.
What’s the difference between RPX and IMAX?
| Feature | RPX | IMAX |
|---|---|---|
| Who operates or brands it | Regal’s “Regal Premium Experience,” a format Regal describes as unique to its theatres. Regal RPX | A separate theatre and presentation brand. IMAX describes standards for theatre design, sound, and presentation. IMAX |
| What the format advertises | A large screen, digital projection, surround sound, and Buttkicker seats. Regal describes RPX as a custom premium environment; it does not publish one set of screen, resolution, or audio specifications for every RPX auditorium. Regal Regal’s PLF explainer | Large-screen presentation, tuned sound, and speaker placement. IMAX venues use different theatre and projection configurations, so the label alone does not identify one projector or screen format. IMAX IMAX system overview |
| Film-specific presentations | Check the local listing for details about the auditorium and the particular showing. | Some films have IMAX-specific expanded imagery or special presentations, including limited-location 70mm film screenings. Not every IMAX showing uses 70mm film, laser projection, or a 1.43:1 screen. IMAX Corporation IMAX system overview |

What does RPX offer?
RPX stands for Regal Premium Experience. Regal advertises it as a premium environment with a large screen, digital projection, surround sound, and Buttkicker seats, which add seat-level vibration. Those are Regal’s format descriptions, not a guarantee that every RPX room has identical screen dimensions, resolution, or audio equipment.
For the specific showing, use Regal’s theatre listing to confirm the auditorium and available seats. Regal describes RPX and other premium large formats in its premium large-format explainer.
What does IMAX offer?
IMAX combines a branded presentation system with theatre design and sound standards. IMAX describes integrated sound, precise speaker positioning, and digital remastering tools that can adapt films for IMAX presentation. Regal’s IMAX page also describes curved screens and customized sound. These vendor descriptions explain the intended experience, but they do not make every venue identical. IMAX’s experience overview and Regal’s IMAX page provide their respective details.

IMAX is not one projector or screen specification
IMAX materials distinguish several theatre-system types, including GT, SR, MPX, and dome systems, as well as different projection options. IMAX 70mm film is available at a limited set of locations; 4K laser is another system. An “IMAX” label by itself does not tell you whether a particular auditorium uses 70mm film, laser, or a 1.43:1 screen. Check the venue and the film’s advertised presentation instead. IMAX’s system overview and IMAX Corporation’s location announcement describe the range and limited availability.
Is RPX better than IMAX?
There is no reliable across-the-board winner. The official format descriptions do not provide a standardized, venue-by-venue comparison of screen size, brightness, resolution, comfort, or price. A particular RPX auditorium could suit you better than a particular IMAX auditorium, or the reverse; the film and showing may matter as much as the format name.

- Choose IMAX when the specific showing offers the film presentation you want. This is especially relevant for a movie marketed with IMAX-expanded imagery or a special IMAX 70mm run. Confirm that the local showtime actually offers that version.
- Choose RPX if Regal’s advertised premium auditorium package appeals to you. Consider the large-screen presentation, surround sound, and Buttkicker seats, then check the specific auditorium listing.
- If both showings are standard digital presentations, compare the practical details. Look at the theatre, seat location, showtime, and ticket price rather than assuming one format is inherently superior.
How to choose a showing
- Check the film’s format. Look for explicit wording about IMAX-expanded imagery or an IMAX 70mm presentation; the IMAX name alone does not confirm either.
- Check the exact auditorium. Review the theatre’s listing for the screen, seating, and any projection or sound details it publishes. RPX specifications are not universally stated, and IMAX configurations vary.
- Compare the actual seats and showtimes. Seat position and schedule can make one local option more convenient or comfortable for you.
- Compare current ticket prices. No universal RPX-versus-IMAX price ranking is established; use the local listing for the showtime you plan to attend.
Regal’s descriptions of RPX and IMAX, alongside IMAX’s overview of its presentation system, can help explain the labels. The venue’s current showtime listing is the place to verify what is actually being offered.
