Tappa’s swift, unpredictable phrases sound different when the form leaves the Gwalior and Banaras vocal traditions: in a Sahaswan-Rampur performance, in Bengali song, and even on sitar. These examples show how raga, rhythm, language and performance style shape a Hindustani vocal genre whose quicksilver taans are more than a display of speed.

What makes a tappa sound like tappa?

Tappa binds lyric and melodic elaboration closely together. Its rapid taans—swift melodic phrases—turn sharply, leap and twist across vowels and consonants. The effect is not just velocity: quick phrases create tension with the rhythmic cycle, and their unexpected resolutions keep the melody from feeling predictable.

In a 2014 essay, musician and writer Aneesh Pradhan called these patterns “quicksilver taans or swift phrases.” The metaphor captures their elusive quality: a phrase can dart across the melody and change direction before the listener has settled into an expectation.

The sources describe Punjabi, Pashto and Sitarkhani as tala choices for tappa. Traditional compositions are primarily in Punjabi dialects, while Bengali tappas form a distinct regional body of work.

Listen beyond the Gwalior and Banaras examples

Pradhan’s December 2014 article extends a three-part listening series beyond the Gwalior and Banaras gharanas featured in its earlier installments. Its performances move between vocal traditions and languages, then make a striking turn from voice to sitar.

Mushtaq Hussain Khan: a Kafi tappa in a 16-count cycle

The series opens with Ustad Mushtaq Hussain Khan (1880–1974), a prominent vocalist of the Sahaswan-Rampur tradition, singing a Kafi tappa. The cycle is described as having 16 counts; Pradhan tentatively identifies it as a kind of Ekvai taal, while noting that the tabla is not very audible. That uncertainty matters: the count is given, but the exact tala identification is not definitive.

Bengali tappa: three voices, distinct settings

The Bengali examples illustrate how tappa became part of a regional song tradition rather than simply reproducing its Punjabi-language repertoire.

  • Lalchand Boral, “Anugata jone kano”: identified as a Nidhubabu tappa.
  • Ramkumar Chatterjee: a recital in the Puratoni Bangla Gaan, or Baithaki Gaan, tradition.
  • Manna Dey, “Tomari Tulana Tumi Pran”: a Khamaj tappa set to Jat taal.

Buddhaditya Mukherjee: tappa on sitar

The sequence closes with sitar virtuoso Buddhaditya Mukherjee playing a Khamaj tappa in 16-matra Sitarkhani taal, accompanied by tabla player Shafaat Ahmed. The instrumental setting makes clear that the form’s identity is not confined to sung words: its quick, intricate melodic movement can be heard through an instrument as well.

How tappa travelled into Bengali music

Accounts of the form trace its roots to songs associated with camel drivers in Punjab and credit Ghulam Nabi, also known as Shori Miyan, with shaping tappa in the context of the Awadh court. These are reported origins, not a definitive chronology established by archival evidence in the cited accounts.

Bengali composer Ramnidhi Gupta, known as Nidhu Babu, is described as adapting northern tappa into Bengali compositions. Those versions are said to move at a slower pace and give greater emphasis to poetry. In Bengal, tappa’s features were also absorbed into other song traditions, including Puratoni Bangla Gaan and Baithaki Gaan.

The form’s demands should not be mistaken for ease. In a later Scroll feature, Gwalior gharana exponent Shashwati Mandal discussed the training and breath control it requires, while veteran singer Shanno Khurana challenged the idea that “light classical” means easy. Those observations are reported interview comments, not a claim that every tappa performance follows one technique.

What to listen for across the examples

Comparing these recordings works best when you listen for several dimensions together, rather than treating speed as the sole measure of the form:

  • Melodic movement: notice the sudden turns, leaps and quick resolutions that give the taans their unpredictable character.
  • Rhythm: listen for the interplay between phrases and tala. The examples include a tentatively identified 16-count cycle, Jat taal and Sitarkhani taal.
  • Language and tradition: compare Punjabi-rooted tappa with Bengali compositions and the settings in which Bengali tappa was absorbed.
  • Raga and performer: Kafi and Khamaj appear in the 2014 examples. A 2019 listening feature adds Khamaj performances by Sharad Sathe, Sharadchandra Arolkar, Siddheshwari Devi, Rajan and Sajan Mishra, and Malini Rajurkar.
  • Voice and instrument: the vocal performances make the relationship between text and melody audible; Mukherjee’s sitar performance foregrounds the melodic architecture without sung words.

The earlier Gwalior and Banaras installment offers a useful contrast, with vocalists performing tappa in ragas including Kafi and Bhairavi, and examples in Sitarkhani or Addha and Teentaal. Taken together, the series and later Khamaj examples show a form that can be compared across gharanas, languages, ragas, talas and instrumental settings—not reduced to a single sound or lineage.
