Johnny Depp has not been confirmed for Pirates of the Caribbean 6. On August 16, 2026, producer Jerry Bruckheimer said he and the filmmakers were talking with Depp while working on a screenplay. That is evidence of discussions—not a casting announcement, a signed deal, or confirmation that the film is moving into production.
What did Jerry Bruckheimer say about Johnny Depp?
In an August 16, 2026 interview with TheWrap, Bruckheimer said: “We’re talking to Johnny. We’re working on a screenplay. Hopefully we can get this done.” His statement supports the report that discussions are happening as screenplay work continues. It does not say Depp has accepted a role or that Disney has approved his return.
TheWrap reported that representatives for Depp, Bruckheimer, and Disney did not respond to its request for comment. The public statement is Bruckheimer’s account of the talks; it is not an announcement from Depp or the studio.
Is Johnny Depp coming back as Jack Sparrow?
His return remains unconfirmed in the cited reporting. Bruckheimer has publicly expressed a desire to work with Depp, but that preference is distinct from an agreement.

Bruckheimer has said he wants Depp in the film
In March 2026, responding to reports that new Pirates films were being developed without Depp, Bruckheimer told The Direct: “First of all, that’s not true. No, no, no. Johnny… if it’s up to me, he’ll be in it.” That conveys the producer’s preference; it does not establish that Depp accepted or that Disney finalized casting.
The script has been described as a condition
In August 2025, Bruckheimer told Entertainment Weekly: “If he likes the way the part’s written, I think he would do it.” He also said the screenplay was not finished and that the team needed to find the right screenplay. Those comments describe a possible return dependent on the writing, not a commitment by Depp.

Is Pirates of the Caribbean 6 happening?
Bruckheimer’s latest comments indicate screenplay work, but the available reporting does not establish that the sixth film is in production. Backstage reported that Disney had not announced an official title or plot for the next film. The sources cited here also do not confirm a completed script, final cast, or release date.
There has been reporting about more than one development path, but it should not be mistaken for a confirmed version of the next film. In September 2025, Bruckheimer told TheWrap that Margot Robbie remained involved in some capacity and that two scripts had existed before one dropped out. That is background on development at that time, not confirmation of a final format, story, or cast.

How to read the reports
The statements describe different levels of progress. A producer’s preference is not a performer’s agreement; reported conversations are not official casting; and screenplay work does not, by itself, confirm a production start. No official title, plot, release date, or final cast is established by the sources cited above.
