Australia held a one-off National Day of Mourning and public holiday on Thursday, 22 September 2022, to commemorate Queen Elizabeth II. It coincided with the National Memorial Service in Canberra. The holiday is over; it was not an annual observance or a proposal for a future date.

Queen Elizabeth II died at Balmoral in the United Kingdom on 8 September 2022, according to the Governor-General’s statement on her passing.

On 11 September, Albanese announced the National Day of Mourning and said he had asked state and territory leaders to declare 22 September a National Public Holiday. The later announcement from the Prime Minister’s office confirmed the National Memorial Service would take place on the one-off holiday.

The National Memorial Service was held at Australian Parliament House in Canberra. It was scheduled to begin at 11 am with one minute’s silence. The day was designated to honour the Queen’s life and service.

Was the public holiday implemented across Australia?
State records show that the holiday was formally implemented in at least Queensland and Western Australia. Queensland’s 2022 holiday calendar says the date was appointed as a public holiday after an amendment to the Holidays Act 1983 passed on 15 September. Government House Queensland recorded Royal Assent for the legislation. Western Australia’s Gazette proclamation appointed 22 September as a public and bank holiday throughout the state.
These records document implementation in those states; they do not, by themselves, establish the precise arrangements in every state and territory.

Why did the original headline say Australia “may get” a holiday?
The wording reflected the uncertainty on 11 September 2022, when the Prime Minister announced the planned day and said he had asked Premiers and Chief Ministers to declare it a public holiday. Subsequent official records confirm that 22 September was observed as a one-off public holiday. It is now a historical event, not an unresolved possibility.
