The LEGO Pokémon sets described as a “leak” are now official: LEGO announced Mewtwo’s Lab Break (72163) and Cubone and Gengar’s Spooky Showdown (72166) on June 2, 2026. LEGO does not use “Gengar’s Ghost Challenge” as the second set’s name. Both are SMART Play Compatible sets scheduled to become available from August 1, 2026 in launch markets; neither includes the SMART Brick required for its interactive sounds and lights.
What are the official set names and details?
LEGO’s June 2, 2026 announcement identifies the two sets by these names and numbers. The announced prices are US retail prices, not a guarantee of current pricing or stock at any seller.
| Set | Pieces and age | Build and figures | Announced US price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mewtwo’s Lab Break (72163) | 605 pieces; ages 10+ | Lab tank breakout scene with an adjustable tank, information screen, Master Ball, and Mewtwo figure over 7.5 inches (19 cm) tall. Includes one SMART Tag and one Pokémon figure. | US$69.99 |
| Cubone and Gengar’s Spooky Showdown (72166) | 782 pieces; ages 8+ | Treasure challenge featuring Cubone and Gengar; Gengar build is over 4.5 inches (11 cm) high. Includes four SMART Tags and two Pokémon figures. | US$89.99 |
The piece counts, age grades, dimensions, included items, and prices above are figures announced by The LEGO Group in 2026. The sets have different themes and contents, so price and piece count alone do not establish which offers better value.
Do the sets need a SMART Brick?
Both products are SMART Play Compatible, not All-in-One sets. LEGO says Compatible sets include SMART Tags but not a SMART Brick. The brick is included with an All-in-One set, sold separately with that set, and activates the interactive sounds and lights. LEGO says SMART Bricks are not sold as standalone products.

The two June announcements extend that collaboration with SMART Play-compatible builds centered on a lab breakout and a spooky treasure challenge.
LEGO’s official announcement and product information establish the sets’ identities and announced features; they do not establish current availability at a specific store. For the official compatibility explanation and set listing, see LEGO’s Gengar set page.
