These seven books offer different ways into Afghanistan: fiction, poetry, memoir, political history and social reporting. The list, published by Scroll.in on August 29, 2021, was framed as the Taliban returned to political control. It is a curated reading list—not a complete account of the country or a guide to present-day conditions.

Seven books, seven different perspectives

The titles range from imagined lives in Kabul to Afghan-American memories and accounts of politics, poetry and the opium economy. They are best read as distinct lenses rather than substitutes for one another.

Book Form and focus What it offers
The Dressmaker of Khair Khana by Gayle Tzemach Lemmon Narrative nonfiction; women’s lives and work Kamila Sidiqi’s dressmaking enterprise, begun to support her family under the first Taliban regime, and the collective effort behind it.
Load Poems Like Guns: Women’s Poetry from Herat, Afghanistan, edited and translated by Farzana Marie Poetry anthology; women’s literary practice Poems by eight women from Herat, including Nadia Anjuman, set against restrictions and silencing faced by women.
The Swallows of Kabul by Yasmina Khadra, translated by John Cullen Novel; life in wartime Kabul Two couples’ lives in a city marked by war and religious fanaticism. Khadra is the pen name of Algerian writer Mohammed Moulessehoul.
West of Kabul, East of New York by Tamim Ansary Memoir; identity and family An Afghan-American account of family, childhood, travel and the author’s experience around the September 11 attacks, exploring distance between Afghan and American frames of reference.
Taliban: Militant Islam, Oil and Fundamentalism in Central Asia by Ahmed Rashid Political history and analysis An account of the Taliban’s rise and the regional, political and economic context around the movement.
Poetry of the Taliban, edited by Alex Strick van Linschoten and Felix Kuehn Poetry anthology; Taliban-associated writing Poetry attributed to Taliban authors, some of it circulated through the group’s website. The editors present a range of themes rather than treating the movement as culturally or politically uniform.
Opium Nation: Child Brides, Drug Lords, and One Woman’s Journey Through Afghanistan by Fariba Nawa Reported and partly autobiographical nonfiction An examination of the opium economy and its human consequences, including the practice described as “opium brides.”

How to choose where to start

For women’s experience and literary voices

Start with Lemmon’s account of Sidiqi’s work if you want a narrative about economic survival and collective action under restriction. Marie’s anthology offers a different form of agency: poems by women from Herat, including Nadia Anjuman.

For fiction about Kabul

Khadra’s novel follows two couples in a city shaped by war and religious extremism. It is a work of fiction, not a documentary account of Afghan society.

For Afghan-American identity

Ansary’s memoir moves through family history, childhood, travel and the aftermath of September 11. Its personal storytelling provides a perspective on the gap between Afghan and American ways of understanding events.

For politics and social reporting

Rashid’s book is the list’s political-history selection, focused on the Taliban’s rise and its regional setting. Nawa’s work approaches the country through reporting and personal experience around the opium economy and its effects on people.

Rank #2

For poetry associated with the Taliban

Poetry of the Taliban offers writing attributed to Taliban authors. Its presence alongside the women’s poetry collection makes clear that this list includes contrasting literary contexts, not a single representative Afghan voice.

What this reading list can—and cannot—show

Together, the books cover women’s work and constraints, literary expression, war, identity, politics and the social effects of the opium economy. Their genres and viewpoints differ, and seven selections cannot stand in for Afghanistan’s full history or the experiences of all Afghans.
