What the 2014 poll was—and what can be verified
Andy Greene’s Rolling Stone article presented readers’ favorite protest songs in December 2014, against the backdrop of protests after the Ferguson grand jury decision in the death of Michael Brown. The archive describes most of the selections as coming from the 1960s and early 1970s. That is the article’s characterization, not a separately measured breakdown. The complete ranked list is not present in the available archived text. A later academic study confirms that it examined the ten songs rated in the 2014 poll, but its abstract does not name them. It would therefore be misleading to supply a remembered or different publication’s list as though it were this poll.
What a later study says about the songs’ language
In a peer-reviewed study published in 2019, Pimpaka Chaiyachok and Savitri Gadavanij analyzed the lyrics of the ten songs rated in the poll. They sourced lyrics from Genius, treated each English sentence structure as an utterance, and did not count repeated chorus sentences again. The authors report that indirect speech acts were often used for social satire or criticism, while expressive acts could invite emotional involvement. Those are findings about the researchers’ textual corpus; they do not prove how every listener responded or what effect any song had in a protest.

The abstract contains an internal counting discrepancy: it reports 180 utterances overall, while its four category figures—84 expressive, 67 representative, 24 directive, and 6 commissive—add to 181. It also reports 87 direct and 94 indirect illocutionary acts, which likewise add to 181. These totals should be presented as reported rather than silently reconciled. How to read a readers’ poll about protest music
A readers’ poll is evidence of what a publication’s participating audience chose in a particular moment. It is not a universal measure of musical importance, nor does the available account establish that it represents every audience, community, or musical tradition. Its timing matters: a poll prompted by a contemporary protest context can bring older songs into renewed conversation, while its selections also reflect the audience and editorial setting in which people were asked to vote.

“Protest song” can describe more than one relationship between music and activism. A song may address a named grievance or policy directly; it may use metaphor, satire, or an indirect appeal; or a movement may adopt a song written earlier for a different context. These distinctions help explain why listeners can disagree about what belongs on a best-of list without either side using an obviously wrong definition.
For a new ranking, rather than a report of the 2014 poll, useful criteria would include the issue addressed, whether the song was written in response to events or adopted later, the directness of its language, documented use in protest settings, and which communities and musical traditions the selection represents. Such a list should identify whose judgment it reflects and keep its criteria visible. Those standards are editorial choices, not facts about the unavailable 2014 ranking.
