Kardashian and Jenner filed the public defamation case against Ray J in October 2025. His separate claim over an alleged 2023 agreement was sent to private arbitration, where the competing breach allegations remain unresolved.
Who sued whom?
Kardashian and Jenner are the plaintiffs in the public case, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court in October 2025. Their complaint alleges that Ray J, whose legal name is William Ray Norwood Jr., made false and damaging statements linking them to a federal racketeering investigation and possible charges. Those are allegations in the complaint, not findings by a court. The Associated Press account of the filing and the Los Angeles Times report describe the case.
AP reported that the complaint attributed two remarks to Ray J during a May TMZ special: “racketeering charges against the Kardashians would be appropriate,” and “if you told me that the Kardashians were being charged for racketeering, I might believe it.” The complaint also asserted: “No such federal investigation exists; no law enforcement agency has initiated any criminal proceedings or investigations related to racketeering charges against Ms. Kardashian or Ms. Jenner; and no credible evidence whatsoever supports these inflammatory allegations.” These are statements attributed to the complaint, not independent judicial findings about an investigation or the truth of the allegations.
What is the $6 million contract dispute?
Ray J alleges that he and Kardashian and Jenner entered into an agreement in 2023 to resolve their long-running sex-tape dispute. He says it provided for $6 million in payments and restricted public statements. The agreement’s terms and each side’s account of alleged breaches are contested; the reported figure is not a court award. A case-document index and LegalClarity’s explainer describe the contract allegations.

Kardashian and Jenner have also accused Ray J of violating the agreement. The available reporting does not establish that either side breached it, or determine what relief either side should receive.
Why is there also a $7 million figure?
TMZ reported that a letter dated October 3, 2025, from Kardashian and Jenner’s lawyers demanded $7 million from Ray J over an alleged breach. That reported demand is distinct from the $6 million in payments Ray J says the 2023 agreement provided for. Neither amount is a judicially determined debt or award. The demand-letter figure was reported by TMZ.

How the two legal tracks differ
| Track | Who brought it and what it concerns | Forum and reported status | What remains undecided |
|---|---|---|---|
| Defamation and false light | Kardashian and Jenner allege Ray J made false, damaging statements about racketeering-related investigation and charges. | Los Angeles Superior Court. In August 2026, a judge denied Ray J’s bid to dismiss the claims. | Whether the claims succeed on their merits. |
| Contract | Ray J alleges Kardashian and Jenner breached the 2023 agreement; they also allege he breached it. | Sent to private arbitration, according to reporting on the 2026 ruling. | Whether either side breached the agreement and any resulting relief. |
The court and arbitration proceedings are separate. Reporting on the ruling says the contract claims went to arbitration while the defamation case remained in court. TMZ and Us Weekly reported that the judge denied Ray J’s dismissal bid in August 2026. That procedural decision allowed the defamation claims to continue; it did not decide whether Ray J defamed Kardashian or Jenner, whether any party breached the agreement, or whether anyone owes money.

The question can refer to different claims. The reported August 2026 ruling denied Ray J’s attempt to dismiss Kardashian and Jenner’s defamation claims in court. His contract allegations are being handled separately in arbitration. Neither development establishes a final merits outcome. The latest procedural update reflected in the reports cited here is from August 2026; later court scheduling or arbitration developments are not established here.
