For rare Billy Joel photos, start with the official photo galleries, then explore the Billy Joel Archive material published by the Library of Congress and the Sony Music / Legacy archive feature. These sources offer different kinds of images and context; none of their public display, by itself, grants permission to reproduce a photograph.
Start with Billy Joel’s official photo galleries
The official Photos index groups images by subject rather than presenting a single exhaustive archive. Its categories include Live Photos, Special Events, Photo Album, Album & Single Artwork, and a 20th Century Cycles Gallery. Fan-oriented sections include collectible and concert photos. This makes the index a useful first stop whether you are looking for performance shots, career ephemera, or images connected to a particular release.
A separate Photo Album section is also indexed on the official site. The existence of that page does not establish that every historical photograph is currently available there, or that visitors may reuse the images.

Sony Music / Legacy Recordings
An official-site behind-the-scenes feature documents Legacy Recordings visiting the Sony Music Archives Library with director Tom Tierney to film material from the Billy Joel photo archive. It establishes an institutional archive context, but it is not an open-download or reuse license.

Library of Congress Gershwin Prize program
The Library of Congress program for the 2014 Gershwin Prize includes a visual timeline with childhood, band, and performance images. Unless otherwise noted, the program credits its photographs to the Billy Joel Archive. Its timeline supplies useful context for early images: Joel was born in 1949, began piano study in 1953, joined his first band in 1963, received a solo recording contract and released Cold Spring Harbor in 1971, and recorded Piano Man in Los Angeles in 1973–74. The program is a published selection, not a complete inventory of rare photographs.
Documented 1974 images
A May 9, 2014 post on Joel’s official site identifies an image of a young Joel as having been taken by a Columbia Records photographer in 1974. The post also shows a Streetlife Serenade print advertisement dated November 1974. These examples are useful because the source provides specific attribution and dating rather than simply labeling an image “rare.”

The surfaced press resource requires a login to download its press image, so it is not equivalent to an unrestricted public gallery.

For editorial or commercial use, confirm rights image by image
A photograph appearing on an artist’s site, in a fan gallery, in a Library of Congress program, or in a pressroom is not automatically free to republish. Rights depend on the particular image, the intended use, territory, and publication. Identify the photographer or credited archive, then confirm permission with the relevant rights holder or source before reproducing it.

These sources document different parts of Joel’s career, but they do not establish a verified exhaustive catalog, an image count, or that any particular photograph is unique or unpublished. If you are searching for a specific era or event, use category names such as “Live Photos,” “Special Events,” and “Photo Album,” and compare captions and credits rather than relying on a “rare” label in search results.
