The One-Above-All tops this editorial ranking, followed by the Living Tribunal and the cosmic embodiments Eternity, Infinity, and Oblivion. This is a judgment-based list of Marvel comics characters, not an official Marvel ranking. It compares the scope of each character’s power, their place in the cosmic order, demonstrated story roles, and how much their power depends on a host, artifact, or temporary state.

How this ranking works

The list focuses on Marvel comics continuity, not film or television versions. It ranks characters by their broadest established cosmic significance, while noting when a placement depends on a particular state or interpretation. These are comparison points, not a mathematical score: Marvel’s character profiles describe roles and relationships, but do not establish a definitive order from one to nineteen.

Cosmic entities, powerful individuals, and beings whose abilities vary with circumstance do not fit neatly on one scale. The order below is therefore most useful as a map of relative scope, not a claim that every character would win a fight against everyone ranked beneath them.

The 19 most powerful Marvel cosmic characters

Rank Character Why this placement
1 The One-Above-All Placed first as the supreme figure in this editorial hierarchy. A secondary ranking also treats the One-Above-All as supreme, but that is not an official Marvel character profile or publisher-issued ranking: ComicBook.com’s cosmic-character list.
2 The Living Tribunal Its role as a cosmic authority places it just below the supreme creator figure in this framework. Marvel’s official guide says Eternity answers only to the Tribunal: Marvel’s guide to galactic empires.
3 Eternity Marvel describes Eternity as the personification of time, an embodiment of matter, and the living sentience of the cosmos. That scope makes Eternity one of the highest-ranking entities here; Marvel also says Eternity answers only to the Living Tribunal: Marvel’s Eternity profile.
4 Infinity Infinity and Eternity together encompass space and time in Marvel’s cosmic framework. This ranking places Infinity beside, but just below, Eternity as an editorial distinction rather than a settled canon ordering: Marvel’s Eternity profile.
5 Oblivion As an embodiment of non-existence and a cornerstone of the cosmic order alongside Eternity, Death, and Infinity, Oblivion represents a fundamental force rather than a conventional super-powered opponent: Marvel’s Oblivion profile.
6 Death Death is a cosmic cornerstone in the same broad order as Eternity, Infinity, and Oblivion. This placement reflects that fundamental role, while separating Death’s domain from the larger scope attributed to the entities above.
7 The Phoenix Force The Phoenix Force is a cosmic power in its own right, not simply the strength of whichever person hosts it. Its relationship with a host matters: Marvel’s account describes immense power while also showing a host’s body and consciousness being constrained or overwhelmed: Marvel’s Phoenix Force profile.
8 The First Firmament This primordial cosmic entity is included for its extraordinary scale and connection to the formation of the multiverse. Its position is an editorial comparison, not one fixed by an official ranking; the exact order among such abstract beings is especially open to interpretation.
9 The Beyonder The Beyonder’s placement depends heavily on which comics-era version and circumstances are being considered. This list does not treat every depiction as identical or use a temporary peak as a universal baseline, so the rank is deliberately below the top cosmic embodiments.
10 Molecule Man Molecule Man’s importance and power have varied across Marvel stories, making a single fixed placement difficult. He ranks here as a character with exceptional reality-altering potential, while avoiding the claim that every version is equally powerful at all times.
11 Franklin Richards Franklin belongs in a cosmic-power ranking because his abilities have reached beyond ordinary human or mutant-scale limits. His place is lower than the abstract entities because his power is tied to an individual character whose capabilities and circumstances can change.
12 Galactus Galactus is a world-consuming cosmic force, but his condition matters: planetary consumption is how he gains sustenance, and Marvel says he can grant Heralds portions of the Power Cosmic. This ranking concerns Galactus as a formidable but variable being, not an assumed permanent maximum state: Marvel’s Galactus profile and Marvel’s Heralds of Galactus profile.
13 The Celestials The Celestials rank among Marvel’s major cosmic powers, but this entry refers to the group rather than one uniform individual. Their standing relative to Galactus and the abstract entities can shift with the specific Celestial and story involved.
14 Master Order Master Order represents a fundamental principle of the cosmic balance. The placement recognizes that conceptual role, while treating the character’s position relative to other abstract entities as a matter of editorial judgment.
15 Lord Chaos Lord Chaos is paired conceptually with Master Order as a force of cosmic balance and opposition. Ranking the two separately is necessarily imprecise; this position reflects the comparison framework used here, not a canonical power gap between them.
16 The In-Betweener The In-Betweener represents a force between opposing cosmic principles. That makes the character more than a conventional villain or combatant, though this list places the role beneath the highest-order embodiments.
17 Dormammu Dormammu is a powerful ruler of a mystical dimension whose reach can extend into cosmic-scale conflicts. His rank reflects formidable power with a domain and circumstances, rather than the universal scope of the abstract entities above him.
18 Knull Knull’s influence and power make him a major cosmic threat, but his importance in particular storylines does not by itself place him above Marvel’s fundamental cosmic embodiments. This list distinguishes a potent antagonist from a personification of the universe or a cosmic principle.
19 Silver Surfer The Silver Surfer is a powerful wielder of the Power Cosmic, but he is a Herald rather than a cosmic embodiment. The ranking places him at the boundary between exceptionally powerful individuals and the larger forces above them; Marvel describes Galactus as granting Heralds portions of that power: Marvel’s Heralds of Galactus profile.

Why the order is not definitive

Marvel’s official profiles establish relationships and roles, not a universal one-to-nineteen scale. Eternity’s profile, for example, describes its cosmic scope and relationship to the Tribunal; the Phoenix profile distinguishes the Force from its hosts; and Galactus’s profile connects his power to planetary sustenance. Those facts help explain why these characters belong in the discussion, but they do not settle every close placement.

Several entries also represent different kinds of power. An abstract embodiment is not directly comparable to a Herald, a ruler of a dimension, or an individual whose abilities vary by story. A ranking that ignores those differences can make temporary conditions sound permanent or turn a broad cosmic role into a simple fight result. The list is best read as an editorial hierarchy of scope and cosmic significance, with the middle and lower placements particularly open to debate.
