In the video described by PerthNow, Snoop sang along to Men at Work’s “Down Under” and said, “We made it to Australia,” in what the outlet characterized as an attempted Australian accent. The report also quoted him singing the lyric fragment, “The land down under… you better take cover”. These are quotations as reported by PerthNow, not an independently verified transcript. Why is “Down Under” well known?
The song’s history offers context for why a brief singalong attracted attention, but these figures relate to the song, not to the response to Snoop’s video.
- “Down Under” spent four weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in early 1983, APRA AMCOS reported in 2022.
- In November 2022, the song received APRA AMCOS’s Billions Award after passing one billion streams across major services.
- Luude’s 2022 version reached No. 1 in New Zealand, No. 2 on Australia’s ARIA Singles Chart and No. 1 on Spotify’s Viral Global Chart.
In the same 18 November 2022 article, Hay described the song this way: “That’s what the song is, it’s about love and celebration in a very true way.” APRA AMCOS has more on the song and its recognition.
