The Nest (2020) is a drama written and directed by Sean Durkin. Jude Law and Carrie Coon play Rory and Allison, an American couple whose move with their children from suburban America to England in the 1980s tests their marriage and Rory’s promise of a more prosperous life.
What is The Nest about?
Rory, a former commodities broker with ambitions of returning to England, persuades his American wife, Allison, and their children to move across the Atlantic. He leases a centuries-old country manor, with space for Allison’s horses, and presents the relocation as the start of a more successful life. But the family’s imposing new home cannot make their circumstances secure: Rory’s plans falter, while Allison and the children struggle with isolation and the upheaval of leaving their old lives behind.

The film’s tension comes less from a conventional thriller plot than from watching aspiration and family roles come under pressure. The move does not create every strain in the marriage so much as expose tensions already there. Durkin described Rory and Allison’s partnership as appearing equal while that appearance gradually unravels; that is his perspective on the story, not the only interpretation a viewer may take from it.

What was Sean Durkin aiming to explore?
Durkin has said that his own childhood between America and England informed the film’s setting: “Growing up between America and England in the 80’s and 90’s, I experienced a stark difference in atmosphere between the two places that has long stayed with me.” He described the film as an unsettling, naturalistic family drama in which a transatlantic move uproots truths that have been dormant within a family. The 1980s setting gives the relocation a particular atmosphere, while the central focus remains the couple and their changing sense of partnership.

Streaming and rental catalogs change by country and date, so check the services available in your location rather than relying on an unverified provider list. The official UK Picturehouse film site advertises DVD, Blu-ray, and digital formats. That confirms formats promoted by the site, not current retailer stock or the region compatibility of a particular disc edition.
