Saafir’s music and Bay Area legacy
Born Reggie Gibson, Saafir was part of Oakland’s hip-hop scene and associated with Hobo Junction. KQED describes his rapping as inventive and lyrically dexterous, marked by a distinct, guttural delivery. A lengthy 1994 on-air freestyle contest between Hobo Junction and Hieroglyphics on KMEL’s The Wake Up Show became a notable moment in his early career. Pitchfork reports that the battle helped lead to a deal with Quincy Jones’s Qwest Records.
Where to start listening
Boxcar Sessions, released in 1994, was Saafir’s debut and is the clearest starting point for listeners exploring his work. KQED characterizes the album as bringing avant-garde jazz influences into conversation with Oakland rap. AllMusic also lists it as his 1994 debut.
