WWE does not publish an official list of Randy Orton’s “first 10 rivalries,” and the surviving milestones in this period do not support an honest ranking of ten sustained feuds. The clearest early rivalries are Mick Foley and Triple H; Shawn Michaels and Rob Van Dam are better described as notable early opponents on the evidence available. This ranking covers Orton’s WWE debut through his break from Evolution and immediate aftermath, weighing story stakes, defining matches, impact on his standing, and the clarity of each feud’s beginning and payoff.
Why this is a shorter ranking than the title suggests
“Rivalry” can mean a multi-month story with a clear escalation and payoff, or simply a memorable match against a major opponent. Those are not the same thing. The official WWE record establishes two especially coherent early feuds for Orton; for several other early names, it establishes a significant match but not enough by itself to claim a sustained rivalry. Rather than fill out ten places with unsupported entries, this list ranks the documented stories and identifies the early matchups that should not be overstated.
WWE says Evolution began taking shape in 2002 and formally adopted its name on Raw on February 3, 2003. The faction framed Ric Flair as its past, Triple H as its present, and Orton and Batista as its future. That context makes Orton’s early rise—and his eventual conflict with Triple H—part of one connected story. WWE’s Evolution history
Randy Orton’s early rivalries, ranked
1. Mick Foley — the defining early feud
Orton’s conflict with Foley gave the Legend Killer persona a vivid target: a respected veteran whose toughness and reputation made him a meaningful foil. WWE traces the feud back to the period after Armageddon 2003, describes Foley as a target of Evolution and Orton’s campaign against legends, and notes Foley eliminated Orton from the 2004 Royal Rumble. At WrestleMania XX, Orton, Flair, and Batista faced Foley and The Rock.

The story reached its most consequential singles match at Backlash 2004. Orton defended the Intercontinental Championship against Foley in a Hardcore Rules match, and WWE describes the contest as defining and career-shaping. The official result confirms Orton retained. The feud ranks first because its premise, escalation, and defining match all reinforce Orton’s emerging identity. 2. Triple H and Evolution — the protégé becomes the rival
Orton’s most important early conflict began inside his own faction. After defeating Chris Benoit for the World Heavyweight Championship at SummerSlam 2004, Orton was turned on by Evolution the following night. The break transformed his relationship with Triple H from mentorship and faction hierarchy into a direct title rivalry. Triple H defeated him at Unforgiven 2004 to reclaim the championship.

This ranks just behind Foley because it is the clearest turning point in Orton’s standing: the faction that helped present him as its future rejected him as a champion. WWE’s current profile calls Orton the youngest World Heavyweight Champion in WWE history at the time, achieved just over two years into his WWE arrival under Triple H and Flair’s tutelage. Notable early opponents that the record does not establish as full rivalries
These matches belong in an account of Orton’s early career, but a match milestone alone is not proof of a sustained feud. They are not ranked as equivalent to the Foley and Triple H stories.

Shawn Michaels — a marquee win, not enough to prove a long feud
WWE’s official Unforgiven 2003 history records Orton defeating Michaels. That makes Michaels a notable early opponent, but the cited result does not establish a longer rivalry with a defined arc and payoff. WWE’s all-time Unforgiven results
Rob Van Dam — the Intercontinental title changes hands
At Armageddon 2003, Orton defeated Van Dam to win the Intercontinental Championship. WWE’s Evolution retrospective identifies Foley as special guest referee. It is an important title milestone and an early meeting with a high-profile opponent, but the result alone does not demonstrate a sustained feud. WWE’s Armageddon 2003 results WWE’s Evolution history

What the early sequence shows
Orton’s formative period is best understood as a progression rather than a verified top ten: Evolution established him as the faction’s future; the Foley feud gave his Legend Killer character a defining test; and winning the World Heavyweight Championship precipitated his expulsion and conflict with Triple H. Michaels and Van Dam mark meaningful early matches along the way, but the documented evidence cited here does not make them comparable in scope to those two rivalries.
