Rachel McAdams surprised viewers on the January 20, 2024 episode of Saturday Night Live, introducing Reneé Rapp before Rapp performed “Not My Fault.” Megan Thee Stallion joined Rapp onstage for the song, making the moment a reunion of sorts for two actresses who have played Regina George.
What happened on SNL?
McAdams appeared during the episode hosted by Jacob Elordi, with Rapp serving as musical guest. She introduced Rapp’s second performance of the night, “Not My Fault,” the collaboration between Rapp and Megan Thee Stallion. Megan Thee Stallion joined Rapp onstage during the performance. TV Insider and Access reported the appearance and performance on January 21, 2024.
Why the cameo resonated with Mean Girls fans
McAdams played Regina George in the 2004 Mean Girls film. Rapp took on the same role in the musical film remake. McAdams’s introduction therefore connected the original movie’s Regina with the actor who carried the character into the remake—a handoff that TV Insider described as one Regina passing the baton to another.
TV Insider reported McAdams’s brief introduction as: “Ladies and gentlemen, once again, Renee Rapp!” The article spells Rapp’s first name “Renee” in that exact quotation; her name is otherwise commonly styled Reneé Rapp.
What is known about the surprise appearance
Access reported that McAdams wore a red suit. That detail describes her outfit; the available reporting does not establish that it was intended as a deliberate Mean Girls reference. The contemporaneous reports also do not explain who arranged the cameo or how far in advance it was planned, so its behind-the-scenes origin remains unclear.
