WWE’s account says Van Dam launched himself from one of the Chamber’s pods to hit a Five-Star Frog Splash. His left knee struck Triple H’s exposed throat. WWE describes the resulting injury as a crushed larynx and says Triple H continued in the match for more than 20 minutes after the impact. WWE’s retrospective recounts the landing and its aftermath.
Did Triple H finish the match?
Yes. Triple H stayed in the match and kept fighting after the landing; WWE says he continued for more than 20 minutes. He avoided a pinfall following the move, so the injury did not immediately end his participation.

What did Triple H and RVD say about the injury?
Triple H’s account at the time
A November 19, 2002, PWTorch report summarizing an interview Triple H gave to WWE said the impact caused swelling inside his throat and narrowed his airway. According to that report, doctors kept him overnight because further swelling could have closed his airway. The report quotes Triple H saying, “Rob tried to protect me as best he could.” The account is a contemporaneous report of his interview, not an independently reviewed medical record. RVD’s later recollection
In a 2021 interview reported by Wrestling Inc., Van Dam recalled that he misjudged the landing and overshot. He described his shin crossing Triple H’s throat and said, “I felt horrible about it.” WWE’s retrospective identifies Van Dam’s left knee as the point of impact; the two descriptions are attributed recollections, so they should not be treated as identical anatomical accounts. Van Dam also recalled that Triple H continued the match. Wrestling Inc.’s 2021 report.
