On March 14, 2024, the actor pleaded guilty to foot travel in a thermal area at Mammoth Hot Springs. The court fined him $500 and ordered a $1,000 community-service payment, plus $40 in fees and assessment.
What happened in the Yellowstone case?
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Wyoming, Brosnan was 70 and living in Malibu, California, when the case was brought. Government court documents described the incident as occurring on or about November 1, 2023, at Mammoth Hot Springs. The government said Brosnan uploaded Instagram photographs of himself standing on a thermal feature. Signs in the area warned of the hazards and directed visitors to remain on designated boardwalks and trails. The official account does not establish which signs he personally saw, how long he was off the trail, or the precise route he took. U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Wyoming
What was the outcome and sentence?
On March 14, 2024, U.S. Magistrate Judge Stephanie A. Hambrick imposed the sentence in Mammoth, Wyoming. The guilty plea was to foot travel in a thermal area.
- $500 fine
- $1,000 community-service payment to the Yellowstone Forever Geological Fund
- $30 court processing fee
- $10 special assessment
Prosecutors had requested two years of probation and the maximum $5,000 fine; those were requests, not the sentence the judge imposed. Early reports also referred to a second petty-offense charge for violating closures and use limits. The Associated Press reported that this separate charge was dismissed; it was not the charge to which Brosnan pleaded guilty. Associated Press

Boardwalks and trails are the safe routes through these areas, not optional shortcuts. National Park Service guidance on Yellowstone thermal areas
