Paul Walker died on November 30, 2013, after the Porsche Carrera GT he was riding in crashed in Santa Clarita, California. He was the passenger; his friend Roger Rodas was driving. The coroner reported that Walker died from the combined effects of traumatic injuries and burns. Officials documented the crash and its aftermath, but the available accounts do not establish what Walker consciously experienced.

What happened to Paul Walker?

At about 3:25 p.m., a 2005 Porsche Carrera GT was traveling on Hercules Street in Santa Clarita when it lost control. A County of Los Angeles Department of Coroner case-report synopsis says the car struck a sidewalk, then a tree and a light post on the driver’s side. It spun, continued east, struck another tree on the passenger side, and caught fire. Walker was riding as a passenger; Roger Rodas was driving. The preliminary coroner synopsis describes the sequence as officials recorded it, rather than providing a complete explanation of every moment before the car lost control.

The synopsis says 911 was called at about 3:31 p.m. and a fire captain determined both occupants were dead at the scene at about 3:38 p.m.

What did investigators conclude caused the crash?

In March 2014, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department concluded that unsafe speed for the roadway conditions caused the solo-vehicle collision. Investigators found no evidence that another vehicle was involved. Their release describes inspections of the car’s powertrain and exhaust, throttle and fuel system, electrical system, steering and suspension, brakes, tires and wheels, and airbag control modules. The release does not identify a mechanical failure as the cause. The sheriff’s collision-investigation release gives the department’s findings.

Why do reports give different speeds?

The figures refer to different reporting stages and should not be treated as a single agreed measurement. A preliminary county account reported the Porsche was traveling at approximately 100-plus mph. In its later completed investigation, the sheriff’s department estimated the speed at impact at 80 to 93 mph. The later figure is specifically an impact-speed estimate; the two figures should not be collapsed into one definitive speed. The early estimate was reported by the Los Angeles Times on January 3, 2014, while the later estimate appears in the sheriff’s March 2014 release.

What was Paul Walker’s cause of death?

The coroner reported Walker’s cause of death as the combined effects of traumatic and thermal injuries. A December 2013 Los Angeles Times report described severe blunt trauma to the head, neck and chest, as well as burns. Assistant Chief Ed Winter, of the Los Angeles County Coroner’s office, told the newspaper that the men died “within seconds” of the crash. That reported statement gives a broad timeframe; it does not reveal what Walker was aware of or experienced. The Los Angeles Times report on the coroner’s findings is the source for the reported injuries and Winter’s statement.

What can be said about his final moments?

The documented account is limited to the timeline, collision sequence, official cause-of-death finding and Winter’s reported statement. Those records do not establish Walker’s thoughts, awareness or subjective experience in the crash. Describing those details as fact would go beyond what the cited accounts document.
