They developed through several uses: telephone and communications work, private access to live performances, and eventually portable personal music. The Walkman helped make listening while moving a familiar consumer experience.
Who invented headphones?
There is no single inventor or company to credit with headphones as we know them. The Smithsonian Magazine describes their origins as a history with multiple contributors and applications, including telephone and communications equipment. One early artifact associated with Nathaniel Baldwin helps document that history, but it does not settle the question of sole invention.
What the Baldwin headset documents
The Smithsonian National Museum of American History catalogs a Type C headset bearing Baldwin’s name and patent dates of May 10, 1910, and September 14, 1915. The museum dates the surviving object to around 1919. Those markings and the catalog entry establish Baldwin’s association with an early headset; they are not proof that he alone invented headphones.
What were headphones originally used for?
Early head-mounted listening served practical communications needs, including telephone work. Headphones also became a way to listen privately to performances happening elsewhere. These uses predated the portable music-player era and show that headphones were useful before they became a personal music accessory.

Live performances, heard remotely
Beginning in 1895, the London Electrophone Company offered subscribers telephone-line access to music halls, churches, and theatres, including Covent Garden Opera. Listeners held the receivers below the chin. This was a subscription service for private, remote listening—not a portable player. The Science Museum Group says the company ceased operating in 1925; its audience and subscriptions had ebbed at points during its history.
How did headphones become a portable music experience?
Sony launched the Walkman in 1979 and developed lightweight headphones alongside the portable player. The combination changed the listening context: people could carry their own music and listen while moving, rather than being tethered to a fixed listening point. Sony says the idea initially met skepticism and describes public demonstrations as a way to introduce this new use.

Sony co-founder Akio Morita, speaking about backing the Walkman name, said: “This is something for the younger generations. If they say it’s good, then that’s that.” Sony’s corporate history reports that more than 400 million Walkman units had been sold between the first model and 2019. That is a company-reported cumulative total through 2019, spanning cassette, CD, MiniDisc, and digital flash-memory models—not a current sales rate.
When did headphones become popular?
The evidence here does not establish a single date when headphones became broadly popular, or provide an adoption survey. It does show distinct changes in use. Headsets served communications and telephone work; the Electrophone offered London subscribers live performances by telephone line from 1895 to 1925; and Sony’s 1979 Walkman paired a portable player with lightweight headphones for listening on the move. Sony’s account of initial skepticism and public demonstrations suggests that portable listening had to be introduced to consumers rather than being an established habit from the start.

What came after the Walkman?
Headphones continued to change in shape and function. In its corporate history, Sony describes the following as its own product milestones; its priority claims should be understood as Sony’s account, not as independently established universal firsts.
- 1982: Sony says it used 16-millimeter drivers for what it calls the world’s first in-ear headphone.
- 1992: Sony says it brought its first consumer noise-cancelling headphones to market.
- 2017: Sony dates the introduction of its wireless headphones to this year.
Together, these milestones trace a shift from communications equipment and remote entertainment toward increasingly personal, portable ways to listen.
