HBO Go was an older HBO streaming service; it is not the current U.S. app for streaming HBO. HBO’s current U.S. guidance points viewers to HBO Max for streaming, or to the HBO channel and HBO on Demand through a TV provider. Outside the United States, availability and access options vary by country.
What was HBO Go?
HBO Go was a streaming service associated with HBO. HBO Max launched in the United States on May 27, 2020, as a direct-to-consumer service that included HBO programming, according to WarnerMedia’s launch announcement. That announcement said many existing HBO and HBO NOW subscribers could access HBO Max at no additional charge at launch. It described the 2020 transition, not a guarantee of current eligibility or billing.

A TV-provider notice listed July 31, 2020, as HBO Go’s discontinuation date. That date is supported by the provider notice, but it should not be treated as a verified worldwide cutoff.
Is HBO Go still available?
HBO’s current U.S. viewing guidance does not list HBO Go. It lists the HBO channel, HBO on Demand, and HBO Max, and directs viewers to HBO Max to stream HBO programming. See HBO’s current ways to watch.

How to watch HBO programming now
- Check availability where you live. HBO Max operates in the United States and selected regions, with country coverage subject to change. Use the official availability page to check your location.
- Choose how you want to watch. In the United States, HBO lists the linear HBO channel, HBO on Demand through a TV provider, and HBO Max streaming as options. The available route depends on your provider and location.
- For streaming, check your device. Consult HBO Max’s supported-device guidance before installing the app; compatibility can vary.
- Install HBO Max and arrange access. On a supported device, find HBO Max in its app store and download it. New subscribers can sign up through a partner or on the service’s website, with options varying by location. The HBO Max help center also provides current subscription and sign-in guidance. Follow the steps for your provider if you subscribe through one.
What to know about an old HBO Go account
Do not assume an old HBO Go app or login will work for streaming today. Check HBO Max’s current sign-in instructions for your provider or account. The launch announcement’s statement that many HBO and HBO NOW subscribers had access without an extra charge applied to the 2020 launch transition; it does not establish present-day access or billing.
