The photo’s owner may still have seen a notification before you undid it, but Meta’s public guidance does not say whether an alert is canceled or retracted. There is no reliable way to tell whether they noticed.
How to undo the Like
Tap or click the photo’s active Like control again to unlike it. The control’s wording or location can vary by Facebook app version. A 2021 consumer-advice response also describes unliking as the way to remove the Like: Rick’s Daily Tips.
Will the photo’s owner get a notification?
Possibly. The owner could have seen an alert before you unliked the photo or before checking Facebook. But the available sources do not establish whether Facebook sends an alert in every case, how quickly it appears, or whether unliking removes one that has already been delivered.
Meta’s Help Center explains how to choose Facebook notification categories and SMS preferences, but it does not document what happens to a Like alert after an unlike: Meta’s notification settings guidance. A notification already displayed on a phone may be different from an alert still waiting in Facebook; the cited guidance does not say whether either is recalled. A 2021 consumer-advice article discusses possible notification-list behavior, but it is secondary guidance, not an official rule.
#1 Best Overall
So if you’re asking, “I accidentally liked a photo and immediately unliked it—will they get a notification?”, the honest answer is that they might have seen one, but there is no supported way to predict whether they did. A quick unlike is not a guaranteed way to prevent someone from noticing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does this apply to every Facebook photo?
Not necessarily. Who can see or interact with a photo depends on its context and audience. Meta says public profile information can include profile photos, and that settings affect who may like or comment on that information. That guidance is specific to public profile information; it should not be treated as a universal rule for every photo or post: Meta’s guidance on likes and comments on public profile information.

The reviewed sources do not establish that Facebook gives the photo’s owner a separate record showing that you liked and then unliked the photo.

What to do after an accidental Like
- Return to the photo and tap or click the active Like control to undo the Like.
- Do not take another action solely to hide it. Unliking removes the active Like, but it cannot tell you whether the owner already saw an alert.
