Lorna Murray’s signature Capri Hat began with an experiment in making a hat foldable. The Perth-raised visual artist’s pleated design, developed in her studio and named in 2011, became the centrepiece of an accessories label now stocked internationally. The story is less a documented measure of sales growth than a product journey: from sunny Doubleview to a distinctive design and a widening retail footprint.
From Doubleview to a practice shaped by art and textiles
Murray grew up in Doubleview, Perth, and studied visual arts at Curtin University, according to a May 2023 profile by PerthNow. She is now based in Sydney, according to the brand’s official biography.
PerthNow quotes Murray recalling the role of her upbringing in her interest in hats: “When I reflect back, growing up in WA with all the sun, naturally hats were a thing I wanted to wear all the time,” she said. The connection between place and product is direct in her account: sun hats were part of her everyday imagination long before the Capri became an internationally distributed design.
How the foldable Capri Hat took shape
The brand’s account traces Murray’s design process to her training as a visual artist and to experimentation with materials. It says an early foldable-hat pattern followed a grant from Western Australia’s Department of Culture & the Arts, and describes travel and research across the subcontinent as part of the development of her creative practice. According to the same biography, studio experimentation with two-dimensional materials began in 2007 and produced the pleated hat in 2011, when it became known as the Capri Hat.

Its sustainability page describes goals that include avoiding overproduction and increasing transparency about who makes its products.
The brand’s homepage describes a process involving in-house design, organically grown grasses, hand-dyeing with textile-certified safe dyes, hand-weaving, cutting and stitching, and individual quality checks. These are the company’s descriptions of its production practices and aims; they do not, by themselves, establish independently verified environmental impact or a lifecycle assessment.
