His family identified kidney failure as the cause of death, according to the Los Angeles Times; the date and age were also recorded by the Television Academy.
What was Peter Marshall known for?
Marshall became a familiar television presence as the host of The Hollywood Squares, the celebrity game show built around a giant tic-tac-toe board. His official biography describes its format: two contestants competed by relying on answers from nine celebrity guests, while Marshall guided the game and helped make the exchanges funny.
The Associated Press described Marshall as the show’s host for 16 years. His role was more than reading questions and announcing moves: he served as the straight man to the celebrity panel, giving the guests’ jokes room to land. The series made him nationally known, but it was one part of a career that also included singing, acting and comedy.
What was the cause of Peter Marshall’s death?
Marshall died at home on August 15, 2024, at age 98. His official site and the Associated Press account reported kidney failure as the cause; the Los Angeles Times attributed that information to a family statement shared by his publicist.

The family statement also joked that Marshall’s official cause of death “should officially be of boredom.” That was a wry family remark, not the reported medical cause.
What else did he do beyond television?
Marshall continued working in musical theater and film after becoming associated with the game show. The Associated Press reported that he performed in more than 800 performances of La Cage Aux Folles on Broadway and on tour. He also appeared in the 1983 film version of Annie.

Marshall’s long run helped define the original-host era of The Hollywood Squares. The show’s simple game structure—tic-tac-toe played with celebrity answers—gave the panel and host a framework for comic timing as well as competition. Marshall’s calm, playful hosting provided a steady center for the celebrity banter.

The AP account places his tenure at 16 years. The series later had revivals, but Marshall remains closely identified with its original run and its blend of game-show play and comedy.
