In a PerthNow report published on 9 December 2021, Perth-raised Monique Fontana spoke about living with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), which she said she had battled since her teenage years. She described a two-week hospital stay for psychiatric care after the condition overwhelmed her, and said regular therapy had helped her.
What Monique Fontana said about OCD
Fontana had previously disclosed her OCD. In its December 2021 account, PerthNow reported that she had experienced the condition since her teens and had spent two weeks in hospital for psychiatric care after becoming overwhelmed.
Fontana said she had initially doubted that therapy could help, but changed her view: “I came to the realisation ‘You can do this’. I was reluctant with therapy because I thought talking can’t help, but it does.” She also emphasized the importance of consistent care.
Why she spoke about her experience
Fontana said she wanted to speak openly to help others and challenge stigma around mental illness. PerthNow quoted her saying: “People don’t treat it like it’s a health condition, but it’s just as important as any other illness.”

Earlier, in January 2021, PerthNow reported that she had created a page called Mental Health Safe Space to share her experiences and said she planned to provide resources and interview mental-health professionals. That report described her intentions at the time; it does not establish whether the page or those plans remain active. She had described the purpose as sharing “the good, the bad and the ugly.”
What the reports do—and don’t—establish
These accounts are snapshots of what Fontana said publicly in 2021. They do not verify her current health, treatment, relationship status or the present status of her mental-health page. Her account is personal testimony, not clinical guidance or a description of every person’s experience of OCD.
