Penélope Cruz says she fears driving because, when she was eight or nine, she watched her sister get run over by a car. Cruz recalled seeing her sister lose consciousness and described the childhood event as a profound trauma. In July 2026, she was reported to be reconsidering getting a license after receiving a car from Bono; the report did not say she had learned to drive or obtained a license.
What happened to Penélope Cruz’s sister?
In ELLE’s cover interview published January 18, 2024, Cruz said: “My sister was run over by a car in front of me when I was eight or nine.” She remembered the red coat her sister was wearing and said she saw her lose consciousness. Cruz also recalled feeling numb at the hospital.
ELLE presents this as Cruz’s recollection and says her sister survived. The interview does not name her. E! News later identified the sister as Mónica Cruz and reported that she recovered. E! News’s report is the source for that identification.
Why is Penélope Cruz scared of driving?
Cruz directly connected her fear of driving to witnessing the accident. In the ELLE interview, she said, “I have a fear of driving,” and described what happened to her sister as “a great trauma.” Her account explains the fear in her own terms; it does not establish a clinical diagnosis.

The interview took place as Cruz discussed playing Laura Ferrari in Ferrari. That film context does not change the explanation she gave for her fear: the childhood accident she witnessed.
Is Penélope Cruz learning to drive now?
A July 3, 2026 report by RTL Boulevard, credited to ANP and based on Cruz’s appearance on Hot Ones, said Bono had given her a car and that she was thinking again about getting a license. The report still characterized her fear as deep. It describes reconsideration, not a confirmed license or a completed change in her driving experience. RTL Boulevard’s report is in Dutch.
