Her first bare-faced appearance in September 2023 was spontaneous: she wanted to spend time seeing Paris instead of sitting for hours in a makeup chair. She later chose to continue the look, and its public meaning grew alongside her own explanation. Anderson has said she was not rejecting makeup—and that, at first, she did it for herself without expecting people to notice.
What happened at Paris Fashion Week?
In September 2023, Anderson attended several Paris Fashion Week shows with a bare-faced or minimal-makeup look, including presentations by The Row, Vivienne Westwood, Victoria Beckham and Isabel Marant. The change stood out because she had long been associated with a highly styled public image.
British Vogue reported that the decision began spontaneously and became a choice she kept making through the week. Anderson explained to Margaux Anbouba that she wanted to walk around Paris and see its architecture rather than spend three hours in a makeup chair. In a later account revisited by Woman & Home, she described preferring the Louvre to that time in the chair.
What did Anderson say her reasons were?
She wanted time to experience Paris
Her practical explanation came first: skipping a lengthy glam routine gave her time to explore the city. To British Vogue, she said, “I’d rather go for a walk and look at the architecture of Paris rather than sit in the make-up chair for three hours.”

She later described a public message
In the same British Vogue interview, published October 31, 2023, Anderson reflected that the choice had also become a statement for younger women: “I know I wasn’t making strides toward world peace, but I was making a statement.” She also made clear she was not opposed to makeup. Her comments frame the appearance as a choice for that moment, not a rule she wanted other women to follow.

In a later interview with Allure, Anderson said, “At fashion week, I did that for myself.” She said she had not expected people to notice, though she liked that the choice resonated. These explanations describe different parts of the story: the initial decision was about how she wanted to spend her time; the public response gave it a wider meaning that she later acknowledged.

Was she wearing absolutely no makeup?
“Makeup-free” was shorthand for a bare-faced or minimal look, not proof that Anderson used nothing on her face. Accounts differ in their details. British Vogue reported homemade rosehip oil, while Vogue France described skincare, air-dried hair and a small amount of mascara, and noted Orveda products in her routine. The coverage does not establish that any one product created her appearance.
Why did the appearance draw attention?
Anderson’s choice became a conversation about how closely women’s appearances are watched and how much room they have to change a familiar public image. Vogue France quoted Anderson describing the feeling as “it’s a freedom, a relief.” Jamie Lee Curtis, quoted in the same coverage, called the appearance “an act of courage and rebellion.” Those are interpretations of its public significance; Anderson’s own account remained rooted in personal choice.

That distinction matters. Anderson did not present makeup as inherently false or a makeup-free face as inherently more authentic. Her comments leave room for makeup as play and self-expression. The story is about her decision and the response it prompted, rather than a universal prescription for how anyone should look.
