In July 2025, an anonymous site called Panama Playlists published Spotify playlists and listening activity it attributed to politicians, executives, journalists and entertainers. The episode appears to have involved public information gathered and republished at scale—not a confirmed breach of Spotify’s internal systems. Its warning is still serious: public profiles, playlists and activity controls can reveal more than users expect, and turning off one setting may not hide everything.
What Panama Playlists published
Panama Playlists appeared in late July 2025. The anonymous site said it had tracked or scraped publicly visible Spotify accounts since summer 2024. It displayed material such as playlist titles and contents, recently played or live listening activity, play counts and timestamps where available, and playlists such as “My Shazam Tracks.” WIRED reported on the site’s claims and the material it displayed; Euronews also covered the claims.

Accounts attributed to people including J.D. Vance, Pam Bondi, Karoline Leavitt, Sam Altman, Palmer Luckey, Seth Meyers, Mike Johnson and Al Roker were among those reported. The site was not affiliated with Spotify or the people named. These are attributions, not proof that every account or stream was correctly identified; the story’s significance is the ease of aggregation, not the songs themselves. 9to5Mac summarized the reported scope.
How certain were the identities?
The site claimed that many accounts used real names and could be matched to their owners with near-certainty. Reporting also described some individuals or journalists confirming that portions of the activity matched their Spotify use. That does not authenticate every account, playlist or listed stream. It is more accurate to distinguish between an individual’s confirmation, a third party’s match, and a claim made by the anonymous site than to treat the entire collection as verified.

- No returns and no refunds on gift cards. Good for use on the US Google Play Store only. Terms apply - see below.
- Google Play gift codes can be used on the Google Play Store, the official app store for Android, to purchase apps, games, and more.
- New finds, old favorites, one card. Choose a unique gift card design featuring your favorite games or apps. This card can also be used for anything else on Google Play. There’s something for everyone, so find what’s yours. Go Play.
- To redeem, enter code in the Play Store app or play.google.com.
- Easy to use: With a Google Play gift code, you never have to worry about expiration dates or fees.
That distinction matters because a recognizable username, profile photo or public social link can make an account easier to connect to a real person, but a match is not conclusive evidence about every item associated with it. WIRED’s reporting and Euronews’ coverage provide context on the attribution claims.
Was Spotify hacked?
Available reporting does not establish that attackers breached Spotify’s servers or stole a private account database. The public account instead points to information visible through ordinary Spotify social features—such as public profiles, playlists, follower relationships or listening activity—being collected and republished. 9to5Mac described the incident as exposure of public Spotify activity, while Engadget likewise focused on privacy settings and visibility.

That is not the same as saying the exposure was harmless. Scraping can turn scattered, relatively obscure details into a searchable record, connect a pseudonymous account to a real person, and preserve information after its owner changes settings. If activity is copied, screenshotted or archived by others, changing a Spotify control cannot guarantee those copies disappear. Long-term listening patterns may also suggest routines or interests, but music and podcast choices do not prove a person’s beliefs, health or identity.
Spotify has several separate privacy surfaces
Spotify’s controls are not one master switch. Its current U.S. support documentation, checked August 18, 2026, describes separate controls for listening activity, recently played artists, public playlists, playlist display on a profile, followers and following, and blocking. Labels and availability can vary by market, account and app version. Spotify’s privacy and social controls guide explains the settings.

| Control | What it affects | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Listening activity | Whether others can see current or recent listening through the relevant social feature. | Disabling it does not make public playlists private. |
| Recently played artists | Whether listening highlights appear on the public profile. | This is separate from sharing live or recent activity. |
| Public playlists | Whether playlists are public and accessible to others on Spotify. | Changing a default for future playlists may not change each existing playlist. |
| Playlists appear on your profile | Whether playlists are shown on the profile. | Hiding a playlist from the profile is not necessarily the same as making it inaccessible. |
| Followers and following | Visibility of social connections, depending on the account interface. | Review followers separately from playlist and activity settings. |
| Blocked users | Specific accounts are prevented from following or seeing the profile or listening activity, according to Spotify. | Blocking is targeted; it does not replace broader privacy settings. |
Spotify’s defaults and exact controls can vary, but the practical point is consistent: a user who turns off listening activity may still have public playlists or recently played artists visible. Spotify’s follower and blocking guidance describes those controls.
Spotify’s records are not the same as public visibility
There are several different questions behind “who can see my Spotify history?” Spotify’s downloadable account data can include streaming history for the previous year, including UTC stream-end timestamps, track, video or podcast names, creator names and milliseconds played. Spotify explains the downloadable data fields. Its privacy policy also says it may retain streaming history for the life of an account for functions such as retrospective playlists and recommendations, subject to the policy and applicable legal requirements.

How to audit Spotify privacy settings
Spotify’s support pages describe these paths as of August 18, 2026. If a label differs in your version or region, search within Settings for the named control.
On mobile
- Tap your profile picture, then open Settings and privacy.
- Select Privacy and Social.
- Review Listening activity and Recently played artists; turn off sharing or profile display if you do not want it.
- Review Public playlists, Playlists appear on your profile, and Followers & following. These govern different kinds of visibility.
- Open the blocked-users list and block specific accounts if needed. Spotify’s follower and blocking help page describes the effect.
On desktop
- Click your profile picture and open Settings.
- Scroll to Social.
- Review Share my listening activity on Spotify and Show my recently played artists on my public profile.
- Use Start a private session for temporary concealment, then inspect each playlist’s individual privacy setting separately.
Audit existing playlists and check the result
Open each playlist you want to restrict and inspect its own privacy options. Reporting on the 2025 incident noted that previously public playlists might need to be handled individually; changing a setting for future public playlists is not proof that old playlists changed. Afterward, inspect your profile while logged out or from a separate account to see what an outsider can access. A playlist not displayed on your profile is not automatically equivalent to a playlist only you can access.

Use Private Session as a temporary control
Spotify says a Private Session temporarily overrides listening-activity sharing. It automatically resets after six hours, and the current interface or support documentation also describes a reset when the app restarts. It is useful for a specific listening session, but it is not a lasting substitute for reviewing profile and playlist settings. See Spotify’s privacy controls guidance and its listening activity help page.
What changed with Spotify Messages in 2026?
On January 7, 2026, Spotify announced a separate Listening activity feature in Spotify Messages. It can show a person’s current track or, when they are not listening, the most recently played song. Spotify describes it as opt-in and visible to friends or family already connected through Messages; users can turn it off in Privacy and social settings. Recipients can interact with or play the displayed track. Spotify’s announcement explains the feature.
This feature is distinct from the 2025 Panama Playlists reporting: Spotify presents Messages activity as selected-contact sharing, while the earlier episode concerned public discoverability and scraping. Users should still check which contacts they are connected to and whether they want to share activity with them.
What the episode does—and does not—show
- It shows how information exposed through social features can become much more revealing when collected over time and republished in one place.
- It does not establish a conventional Spotify database breach.
- It does not prove that every account attributed to a public figure was authentic or that every listed stream was theirs.
- It does not show that a song or podcast choice reliably establishes a person’s politics, beliefs or personal circumstances.
- Changing a setting now can reduce future visibility, but cannot ensure that previously copied material has been removed elsewhere.
The central privacy lesson is that “public” is not the same as “ephemeral.” A profile detail that is difficult to notice in isolation can become a durable record when automated collection makes it searchable, linkable and easy to share.
