Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier III’s wedding photographs document two ceremonies in Monaco, not one: the civil marriage at the Prince’s Palace on April 18, 1956, followed by the religious wedding at St. Nicholas Cathedral on April 19. Read with their captions, the images trace the change of setting and occasion—from Palace scenes to the cathedral, public appearances, and the couple’s departure.
Two ceremonies, two settings
The dates and locations are the key to identifying what a wedding photograph shows. On April 18, 1956, Kelly and Rainier held their civil ceremony at the Prince’s Palace. The religious wedding followed the next day, April 19, at St. Nicholas Cathedral. The Victoria and Albert Museum’s exhibition material discusses clothing Kelly wore for the civil marriage; LIFE/TIME and Getty captions identify religious-wedding images at the cathedral.
| Date | Event | Setting | What captions can help identify |
|---|---|---|---|
| April 18, 1956 | Civil ceremony | Prince’s Palace of Monaco | Palace scenes and Kelly’s civil-marriage outfit. Getty’s catalog identifies civil-wedding images; the V&A provides clothing context. Getty Images · V&A |
| April 19, 1956 | Religious wedding | St. Nicholas Cathedral | Cathedral arrivals, ceremony, exit, and later public scenes. LIFE/TIME and Getty provide image-level captions. LIFE/TIME · Getty Images |
That distinction matters when browsing a mixed gallery: a photograph taken at the Palace belongs to the civil ceremony, while the cathedral sequence belongs to the religious wedding. The dates and venues should travel with any image caption or description, rather than being collapsed into a generic “wedding day.”
How the photographs tell the story
The LIFE/TIME gallery reaches beyond the ceremonies, extending from the engagement period and preparations through the wedding and honeymoon. Its captions identify photographers, including Thomas D. McAvoy and Frank Scherschel, and credit the LIFE Picture Collection/Getty Images. Within the April 19 cathedral sequence, captions identify the couple, the ceremony, and their departure.

Getty’s editorial catalog adds distinct moments from both days: the April 18 civil ceremony at the Palace, and April 19 scenes of arrival at the cathedral, the religious ceremony, the cathedral exit, balcony appearances, and the couple leaving in a convertible. These are separate moments, not interchangeable views of one continuous scene. Check each caption before assigning a photograph to a particular event.
A reception image after the religious wedding has a different archival credit: the Grimaldi Forum press material credits the photograph to the Prince’s Palace Archives. That institutional credit helps distinguish it from LIFE Picture Collection/Getty and Getty editorial images.

Reading the wedding clothes in the images
The V&A exhibition material places Kelly’s wedding clothing in a section on “The Bride,” describes her civil-marriage outfit, and notes that archive film footage of the religious wedding was shown in the exhibition. The film is useful moving-image context, but it does not replace checking a still photograph’s own caption.
For the religious-wedding gown, TIME attributes the design to MGM costume designer Helen Rose and describes silk fabric, lace, pearls, a circular veil, and a Juliet cap. Those details provide context for looking at the cathedral photographs; they should not be treated as features clearly visible in every image or as a substitute for the specific image caption.

Finding photographs and understanding their credits
- LIFE/TIME: Its gallery offers a broad visual sequence, with named photographer credits and LIFE Picture Collection/Getty Images attribution. Begin with the caption when identifying the event or photographer: view the LIFE/TIME gallery.
- Getty Images: Its editorial catalog describes individual civil-ceremony, cathedral, balcony, and procession images. Captions and licensing apply image by image: search Getty’s catalog.
- Prince’s Palace Archives: The Grimaldi Forum press material credits the Palace Archives for a reception photograph after the April 19 religious wedding: consult the Grimaldi Forum press material.
- Victoria and Albert Museum: Its exhibition material adds clothing and archive-film context, rather than serving as a caption database for individual still photographs: read the V&A material.
An archive caption establishes what that archive says about that image; it does not grant permission to reproduce it. For publication, preserve the image-specific photographer and collection credit and confirm reuse rights with the relevant rights holder. A catalog thumbnail should not be assumed to be freely reusable.
