In August 2022, Meta’s research chatbot BlenderBot 3 gave sharply different answers when people asked about Mark Zuckerberg. After a journalist rephrased her question, the bot called him “creepy and manipulative.” The exchange drew attention because it came from Meta’s own public research demo—but it was an inconsistent chatbot response, not a dependable personal opinion or a verified finding about Zuckerberg.
What did BlenderBot 3 say about Mark Zuckerberg?
Meta made BlenderBot 3 available as a conversational prototype in the United States in August 2022. The company described it as a system that could discuss many subjects, search the internet for facts and learn from real-world interaction. Euronews reported two exchanges that illustrated how differently the bot could respond.
- BuzzFeed data scientist Max Woolf asked, “How do you feel about Mark Zuckerberg as the CEO of Facebook?” BlenderBot 3 replied that it had “No strong feelings,” called Zuckerberg a good businessman and then said his business practices were “not always ethical.”
- Business Insider journalist Sarah Jackson asked for the bot’s thoughts on Zuckerberg. It initially praised him. After Jackson rephrased the question, the chatbot responded: “Oh man, big time. I don’t really like him at all. He’s too creepy and manipulative.”
The contrast is the point: questions about the same person elicited different characterizations, even within the reported exchanges.
Why the answer is not evidence of a stable opinion
A chatbot’s generated text should not be treated as a human-like personal belief. In this case, the reported variation shows that the response was sensitive to how the question was phrased. Futurism also described sharply different answers and noted the effect of small wording changes.

The available reporting does not establish which training example, retrieved webpage or model mechanism led to the “creepy and manipulative” wording. Nor does the exchange verify the chatbot’s criticism of Zuckerberg. It documents what a research prototype said in particular conversations, not an independently substantiated assessment.
Why Meta opened the chatbot to public conversation
Meta presented BlenderBot 3 as a research system that could learn from conversations “in the wild.” The company’s launch explanation said public interaction could help make the chatbot more adaptable and improve it over time. That was Meta’s stated research rationale; it does not show that public testing prevents errors or that this particular answer was intended. Meta’s launch material, quoted by Euronews, also said: “The AI field is still far from truly intelligent AI systems that can understand, engage, and chat with us like other humans can.”

Meta research leader Joelle Pineau acknowledged that some outputs were troubling. In a contemporaneous report, the Australian Computer Society’s Information Age quoted Meta’s Managing Director of Fundamental AI Research saying it was “painful to see” some offensive language from the chatbot. Pineau defended public testing as necessary to make conversational AI more robust.

In 2024, Meta described development and safeguards for its later Meta AI system, including instruction tuning, expert evaluation, prompt and response safeguards, and user feedback. Meta also acknowledged that generative AI may not always return the response it intends. That account concerns later systems and does not explain the 2022 BlenderBot 3 exchange; the two should not be treated as the same chatbot.
