1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTo record a TV show, first check whether your exact television model has a built-in PVR, USB Recording, or Time Machine feature. If it does, connect compatible USB storage and record an eligible broadcast received through the TV’s own tuner. If it does not, use the DVR on your cable or satellite receiver, or the cloud DVR offered by a live-TV streaming service. A USB port alone does not mean a TV can record, and pausing live TV may only create a temporary buffer.
Choose the recording method that matches your TV signal
Where the program comes from determines which recording options may work. TV-native recording, a receiver’s DVR, and a streaming service’s cloud DVR are separate systems.
| What you watch | Recording option to check | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| A digital channel received by the TV’s built-in tuner | The TV’s PVR, USB Recording, or Time Machine feature | It must be supported by the exact TV model and market, and usually requires compatible USB storage. |
| A channel from a cable or satellite box connected over HDMI | The box’s own DVR | The TV’s built-in recorder generally records tuner channels, not video from an external HDMI device. |
| Live TV watched through a streaming service | The service’s cloud DVR, if available on your plan | Recording availability and program rights depend on the provider. |
| Live TV you want to pause and resume | A live-TV pause or timeshift feature | A temporary buffer is not necessarily a saved recording. |
Check whether your TV supports recording
Look up the full model number in the TV’s settings, on its label, or in its documentation. Search the manufacturer’s specifications or manual for terms such as “PVR,” “USB Recording,” “Time Machine,” or “Timeshift.” Support can vary by model, release year, and country; a USB port by itself is not evidence of recording support.
For example, Samsung says its PVR feature is available only on supported models and cannot be added later. Its Germany support page says the signal must reach the TV’s built-in tuner, whether by cable, satellite, or terrestrial broadcast. Samsung Australia likewise limits recording to eligible digital broadcast channels received by the TV, not video from an external device or Samsung TV Plus. Check the Samsung Germany PVR guidance and Samsung Australia setup instructions against your local model.

Brand names and menu steps are not enough to establish compatibility. LG’s U.S. Time Machine instructions apply only to supported models; LG says the feature is for models released in 2021 or earlier, with some 2021 models excluded. Philips’ SMART USB Record instructions describe particular older models, not a universal feature across Philips TVs. Consult the local manual for the exact set.
Record a broadcast using the TV’s USB/PVR feature
- Confirm the signal route. Connect the antenna, cable, or satellite feed to the TV’s tuner if the feature requires it. If you watch through a separate receiver connected by HDMI, check that receiver for a DVR instead.
- Check storage requirements. Use a USB hard drive or other storage type expressly supported by the TV. LG’s U.S. Time Machine page lists a minimum of 4 GB capacity and 1 GB of free space for the models it covers; that is not a universal requirement for other brands or models. Philips recommends a hard drive for applicable SMART USB Record models because recordings need substantial storage.
- Connect the drive and follow the on-screen setup. The television may test or format it. Formatting erases the drive, so back up its contents first. Samsung Australia says its recording storage is formatted as NTFS; other models may use different requirements.
- Open Live TV or the guide. Tune to the digital channel, then use the TV Guide/EPG or recording menu to record the current program or schedule an upcoming listing. Supported Samsung sets may offer series recording. LG’s cited 2021 webOS instructions start recording from More Actions while watching a digital channel and schedule through Schedule List or the Broadcast Guide.
- Verify the result. Check the recordings list and test playback before relying on a future scheduled recording. Keep enough storage free and follow the manual’s instructions about whether the TV must remain on, whether you can change channels, and how to stop a recording.
Storage and playback can be tied to the television. Philips says recordings made with its applicable SMART USB Record feature can be played only on the TV that made them. LG and Philips instructions do not establish that recordings can be moved to or played on a computer, so do not assume a USB recording is portable.

If the TV cannot record, check the box or streaming service
Cable or satellite receiver
If the program arrives through a set-top box, look for the receiver’s own DVR or recording menu. Since the TV-native features described by Samsung and LG apply to channels received by the television’s tuner, the receiver—not the TV—is the place to check for recording from that HDMI source.
Live-TV streaming service
Some live-TV services offer cloud DVR, which stores recordings with the provider rather than on a USB drive connected to the TV. Roku’s support page distinguishes its cloud DVR options from third-party channel DVRs and gives Sling TV, Hulu + Live TV, YouTube TV, fuboTV, and Philo as examples. These are examples, not a guarantee that every plan or channel can be recorded. Check the service’s current terms for plan eligibility, recording limits, retention, supported channels, and whether the specific program is recordable.

Roku says its described cloud DVR records live programs, not on-demand titles, and that provider rights can prevent some programs from being recorded. Its support information was updated September 1, 2026; terms and features can change. See Roku’s recording and Live TV Pause guidance and confirm current details with the service itself.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Live-TV pause is not the same as a saved show
Pause or timeshift may hold a temporary position in a live broadcast without creating a recording you can keep. Roku’s over-the-air Live TV Pause feature requires a Roku TV, an antenna or cable connection without a set-top box, and a USB 2.0 flash drive with at least 16 GB. Roku says this allows up to 90 minutes of temporary pause; changing channels, leaving Live TV, or turning off the TV loses the position. It also states that recordings cannot be saved or transferred with this feature.

Roku separately describes a 30-minute rolling buffer for some live streaming channels and eligible premium subscriptions. Rewind range and Start Over access depend on the channel and provider rights, so neither feature should be treated as a universal DVR.

Common recording problems to check
- No recording option appears: Confirm the exact model and regional specifications. A USB port does not establish PVR support, and some features are limited to particular release years.
- The program is playing from a box or app: A TV’s built-in tuner recorder may not capture external HDMI video or streaming-app content. Check the receiver or streaming provider’s DVR options.
- The TV asks to format the drive: Formatting erases existing data. Back up the drive and proceed only if the TV’s manual says that storage device is compatible.
- A scheduled show is missing: Verify that it was saved in the TV’s schedule or provider DVR, that the channel and program are eligible, and that the device meets the relevant power and signal requirements.
- You can pause but cannot find a saved episode: Check whether you used a temporary pause buffer rather than a DVR recording feature.
