You can use VLC with a TV by running VLC on an Android TV device, casting to a Chromecast, or sending media to a compatible DLNA/UPnP renderer. Which route works depends on the device running VLC, the TV or receiver, the VLC version and the media file. These are different features—not a guarantee that VLC can send any file to any smart TV.
Choose the route that matches your TV setup
| Route | Where VLC runs | What the evidence supports | Key qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Android TV | On the TV or attached Android TV device | VideoLAN lists Android TV support for VLC for Android, which plays media files and network streams and can browse NAS/shared drives. | This does not establish support for every smart-TV operating system. The VideoLAN page listed VLC for Android 3.7.0 when accessed on October 8, 2026. VideoLAN: VLC for Android |
| Chromecast | On a compatible source device, sending playback to a Chromecast | VideoLAN’s VLC 3.0 release documentation lists streaming to Chromecast devices; it notes Android Chromecast support from a phone. | The cited feature is documented for VLC 3.0. Check the current VLC app, platform and receiver combination rather than assuming every setup works. VideoLAN: VLC 3.0 release |
| DLNA/UPnP renderer | On a source device, sending media to a network renderer | A VLC developer patch record describes casting to DLNA Media Renderers that implement AVTransport, initially with the default media format. | This is implementation history, not current consumer setup documentation; a TV labeled DLNA is not necessarily compatible with every VLC build or file. How to play VLC on Android TV
If your television or connected box runs Android TV, install VLC for Android on that device and play the media there. VLC’s Android page lists Android TV support, playback of video and audio files and network streams, and browsing NAS or shared drives. The TV-side device is doing the playback; this is not the same as casting from a phone.
Confirm that your particular Android TV device can install the current VLC app. A TV running another operating system does not become Android TV simply because it is a smart TV.
How Chromecast casting differs
With Chromecast, VLC runs on a source device and sends playback to a receiver. VideoLAN’s VLC 3.0 release page says VLC can stream to Chromecast devices, including formats not natively supported by the receiver, and identifies Chromecast support from an Android phone. That statement describes the release documentation; it does not guarantee that every current version, platform, Chromecast model or media file will work together.

- Compact without compromises: The sleek design of Roku Streaming Stick won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.

- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
Check the casting controls in your installed VLC version and make sure the source and receiver are available on the network as required by your setup. If casting is unavailable or playback fails, verify the app/platform combination and try a supported, ordinary media file before drawing conclusions about the whole route.
What DLNA/UPnP support does—and does not—mean
Some TVs and media devices can receive media as DLNA/UPnP renderers. VLC’s developer record describes casting to DLNA Media Renderers that implement AVTransport, with initial support for the default media format. This establishes that VLC has had a renderer-casting route; it is not a current compatibility list or a step-by-step guide for every TV.

If your TV advertises DLNA, check its manual for renderer/AVTransport support and test the exact VLC build and file. The label alone does not establish that VLC will discover the TV or that the TV can play the selected format.
Network playback is not the same as casting
VLC for Android’s ability to open network streams or browse a NAS means it can play media over a network on the device running VLC. It does not, by itself, mean VLC can send that stream onward to a separate television. For TV playback, identify whether VLC will run on the TV-side Android device or whether the source device will cast to a supported receiver.

Check performance and optional audio-only casting
Hardware decoding
VideoLAN says hardware decoding often gives better performance, but it is not supported on all devices. If playback stutters or fails, test the actual file on the source device and receiver, and check whether decoding options are available for that device. A file that plays on one device may not behave the same on another.
VideoLAN does not establish universal compatibility for codecs, subtitle tracks or high-resolution files across these routes. Avoid treating success with one file as proof that every file will cast.

Audio-only casting
A January 2025 VLC Android development message describes a setting to “cast audio only,” meaning audio can be cast without video. Because this is a development change record rather than consumer-facing documentation, availability depends on the app version; look for the option in your installation instead of assuming it is present. Troubleshoot a failed connection
- Identify the route first. Check whether VLC is installed on the TV-side Android device or whether your phone/computer is trying to cast to a receiver.
- Check compatibility at both ends. Confirm the TV/receiver protocol and the source platform and VLC version. A smart-TV label alone does not establish Android TV, Chromecast or compatible DLNA renderer support.
- Try another file. Test a media file with a format the receiver is known to support. VLC’s Chromecast release note is not a guarantee for every current combination or file.
- Check playback performance. Hardware decoding may help where the device supports it; VideoLAN notes it is not supported everywhere.
- For DLNA, verify renderer capability. Look for AVTransport support in the receiver documentation and confirm that your VLC build exposes the needed route.
