The ruling concerned claims against Drake—not every Astroworld case or every defendant. Drake had appeared as a guest performer at the November 5, 2021, festival, and his lawyers argued that he had no role in planning or putting on the concert.
What happened at Astroworld
Astroworld Festival took place in Houston on November 5, 2021. Drake joined headliner Travis Scott as a guest near the end of the concert, during a crowd surge. The Associated Press reported that ten people died and hundreds were injured.
In its 2025 Form 10-K, Live Nation Entertainment reported ten attendee deaths and at least 450 civil lawsuits filed against Live Nation and related entities. Why was Drake dismissed?
Drake’s lawyers argued that he was a guest performer who was not involved in putting on the concert. The Associated Press and the Houston Chronicle reported that Judge Hawkins dismissed him after a hearing on April 10, 2024. That is the safest summary of the rationale available in contemporaneous reporting; the signed order was not independently reviewed, so the judge’s full reasoning cannot be stated here.

TMZ reported, citing court documents it said it obtained, that the dismissal was by summary judgment and with prejudice. Those procedural terms should be attributed to TMZ rather than treated as verified wording from the signed order. TMZ’s April 11, 2024 report
What the ruling did—and did not—decide
- It removed Drake from the claims resolved by his dismissal. It was a ruling about his place in the consolidated civil litigation.
- It did not dismiss the entire Astroworld litigation. Other defendants faced separate motions and rulings; the case did not have one outcome shared by every party.
- It was not a criminal acquittal. The reporting concerns civil claims and a civil-court ruling.
- It does not establish that no one was responsible. Drake’s dismissal was not a resolution of claims against all other defendants.
What happened to claims against other defendants?
The other parties’ positions were distinct from Drake’s. In April 2024, Judge Hawkins declined to dismiss Travis Scott and his touring and production company, XX Global, according to the Los Angeles Times’ Associated Press report. That ruling did not make their cases identical to Drake’s, and it should not be read as a final judgment on the wider litigation. Los Angeles Times / Associated Press, April 25, 2024

Live Nation’s 2025 annual filing later said that during 2024 the company settled all remaining wrongful-death lawsuits and almost all pending personal-injury lawsuits against it, subject to a small number of claims under a show-cause dismissal order. This is Live Nation’s own accounting of claims against the company and related entities; it is not a comprehensive docket update for every party or claimant, nor a report on Drake’s individual disposition.

The Associated Press reported that an attorney asked Drake during his deposition, “Do you see the panic in those people’s eyes?” Drake answered, “I do, sir.” AP also reported that, when asked by an attorney for the Blount family whether he would want answers about what happened, Drake said, “I think I would want answers for what happened, yes.” These reported exchanges are deposition testimony, not findings by the court.
