NC-17 is a U.S. age classification, not a genre—and it does not mean a movie is pornographic. These seven films are worth considering for their filmmaking, ideas, history, or cultural impact, with the important caveat that ratings and cuts can differ. The picks below identify what kind of film each is and what adult material to expect, so you can choose by interest and tolerance rather than explicitness alone.
What an NC-17 rating means
NC-17 means “No One 17 and Under Admitted.” The Motion Picture Association (MPA) says the rating may reflect sex, violence, aberrant behavior, drug abuse, or another element it considers too adult for younger viewers. It is not a judgment that a film is obscene or pornographic: the MPA says NC-17 “should not be construed as a negative judgment in any sense.” The U.S. government-hosted rating description makes the same distinction and lists explicit sex scenes, sexually oriented language, and excessive violence among possible reasons for the designation.

That range matters when choosing a film. An NC-17 label alone does not tell you whether a movie is an erotic drama, a violent thriller, or something else, nor does it describe the intensity or narrative role of its adult material.
Seven NC-17 films to consider
These selections balance filmmaking, historical or cultural significance, and the way difficult material functions in the work. They are recommendations, not a ranking of which film is most explicit. Rating records and releases can refer to different versions, so check the specific cut when that distinction matters to you.
#1 Best Overall
Shame — an intimate character study
For viewers drawn to psychologically focused drama, Shame is a strong starting point. Its adult subject matter belongs to a character study rather than functioning as a genre gimmick. Choose it for a severe, inward-looking drama, not for a light or romantic viewing experience.
Crash — the formally daring choice
David Cronenberg’s Crash is a provocative, deliberately unsettling drama. Its sexual material is tied to the film’s exploration of desire and alienation. It suits viewers interested in challenging, unusual filmmaking; its detached tone and subject matter can be a poor fit if you want a conventional thriller or an emotionally reassuring story.

- Gernika - Koldo Serra - Blu-ray - Region B
Blue Is the Warmest Color — an immersive relationship drama
This relationship drama is the pick for viewers who want an emotionally expansive story about intimacy and change. Its sexual content is part of its depiction of a relationship, but the film’s appeal is broader than those scenes. If you are sensitive to explicit sexual material, consider that before choosing it.
Lust, Caution — an erotic espionage thriller
Ang Lee’s film combines romantic tension with espionage and political danger. Its adult material is embedded in a story about intimacy, deception, and risk, making it a natural choice for viewers who want a period thriller as well as a relationship drama.

Showgirls — a cult-history pick
Showgirls is a flamboyant, deliberately excessive drama whose reputation and afterlife as a cult film are part of its interest. Its sexualized world and abrasive tone are central to the experience. Pick it for camp, provocation, and cultural curiosity rather than understated realism.
Henry & June — an early NC-17-era example
Henry & June is useful for viewers interested in the history of adult-film classification as well as the movie itself. The MPA database’s 1990 record includes the metadata note “Rating Symbol Changed.” That note concerns the record; it should not be read as a description of every current or home-video version.
Rank #4
The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover — a stylized provocation
Peter Greenaway’s highly stylized film is the choice for viewers interested in formal visual design and confrontational storytelling. Its adult content is not limited to sex: violence and disturbing material also contribute to its reputation. The MPA’s 1990 record likewise carries the note “Rating Symbol Changed,” which is database metadata rather than a claim about the current cut.

The classification remains relevant to contemporary films, too. In 2022, the MPA’s CARA Appeals Board upheld an NC-17 rating for Infinity Pool. TIME reported that year that Blonde received NC-17 for “some sexual content” and was released on Netflix after a limited theatrical run. Those are dated examples, not promises of present-day streaming availability.
How to choose the right film—and version
- Start with genre and tone. Choose a psychological drama, romance, erotic thriller, cult film, or formally adventurous work according to what you actually want to watch.
- Consider what the adult material does. It may be central to a character or relationship, part of a provocative style, or one element among violence and other difficult material.
- Check the exact release or cut. A film may have an edited version, and rating records can include changes to the rating symbol. Confirm that the listing or edition is for the version you intend to see.
- Check availability by title and region. Streaming catalogs and physical-media editions change, and availability in one market does not establish availability elsewhere.
For any film, the MPA’s classification is a useful starting point, not a complete content guide. If a particular type of material is a concern, look for a current, version-specific content description before watching.
