What Prince Harry did on the Angola visit
Harry met Angolan President João Lourenço in Luanda on July 15, 2025. The next day, he joined The HALO Trust in Cuito Cuanavale, where he took part in a landmine-safety class for children, spoke with families living near the country’s largest remaining minefield, observed deminers and helped destroy two South African anti-tank mines. HALO’s account of the visit and Associated Press coverage describe the activities.
What the walk represented
HALO said the area Harry crossed in Cuito Cuanavale had been an active, deadly minefield when he first visited it in 2013. It has since been cleared, and a community now lives there. The 2025 walk was not identified as the exact route Diana, Princess of Wales, walked in 1997: HALO places Diana’s visit in Huambo.
Why Meghan Markle stayed behind
Elle reported, citing an unnamed source, that security concerns and parenting priorities were factors in Meghan’s decision not to join the trip, with one parent staying with the children. That is an attributed account, not a confirmed public explanation from Harry, Meghan or their representatives. HALO’s announcement and AP’s reports establish that Harry traveled without Meghan but do not give a reason.

How the visit connects to Diana and Harry’s earlier trips
Diana visited Angola with HALO in January 1997, bringing international attention to the dangers of landmines. AP reported that her advocacy helped mobilize support for a treaty banning landmines later that year.
Harry first visited the Cuito Cuanavale area in 2013, when HALO says it was still an active minefield. In 2019, he visited Huambo, where HALO says he retraced Diana’s steps at a location that had become a community. The 2025 Cuito Cuanavale walk therefore revisited a place Harry had seen before—not the site of Diana’s 1997 walk.

Why landmine clearance remains a concern in Angola
Angola’s civil war lasted from 1975 to 2002, and unexploded mines continue to threaten people after the fighting ended. The figures published around Harry’s visit describe different timeframes and should not be read as a live, independently verified national count:
- Remaining minefields: HALO said in its July 16, 2025 release that more than 1,000 minefields remained in Angola. AP, citing HALO, reported that at the end of 2024 just over 1,000 minefields covering an estimated 67 square kilometres remained to be cleared.
- Reported casualties: HALO said at least 60,000 people had been killed or injured by mines in Angola since 2008, adding that the true number was likely higher.
- Clearance work to date: HALO reported cumulative totals of more than 120,000 landmines and 100,000 bombs cleared in Angola since it began operating there.
On July 15, HALO said the Angolan government had renewed its commitment to clearance through a new three-year contract with the organization. These program details and figures are reported by HALO in its July 16 visit release; AP’s July 15 report provides the end-of-2024 minefield estimate and civil-war timeframe.

What Harry said about the danger to children
HALO’s July 16, 2025 release quoted Harry saying: “Children should never have to live in fear of playing outside or walking to school. Here in Angola, over three decades later, the remnants of war still threaten lives every day.” His visit included a child-safety education class, underscoring how clearance work and helping communities recognize danger are both part of addressing the legacy of mines.
