“In Delhi, nobody gave me my kind of work. So, I created my own work,” Piyush Mishra told Scroll.in in a 2022 interview. The line describes a career built across theatre, songwriting, composition, acting and live performance—not a claim that the work came easily or that every opportunity brought security.
Who is Piyush Mishra?
Piyush Mishra is an Indian actor, playwright, songwriter and composer whose work has moved between theatre, film and live performance. In an interview published by Devarsi Ghosh in Scroll.in on October 10, 2022, he looked back on how that range developed: he was born and raised in Gwalior, then moved to Delhi in the 1980s to study at the National School of Drama. He stayed in Delhi, working in theatre while writing and composing songs.
The interview presents an artist who did not wait for a single route into the profession. Theatre gave Mishra a place to work and create; songwriting and composition grew alongside it. Film acting became another part of that practice, rather than the sole measure of his career.
What did Mishra mean by creating his own work?
The title line is about agency: when the opportunities he wanted were not being offered in Delhi, he made work through the forms available to him. That meant writing and composing for theatre, performing, and continuing to develop songs—not simply waiting for a film role or a conventional break.

Mishra described that approach in a separate Outlook/IANS interview published June 23, 2022: “I think I work because of work, it is karmayoga. I do not really think about the result, I do not wait for an opportunity to come. There is no dearth of work for me, ever because when I do not act in films, I write plays, I compose and write songs, I perform. I think that should be the drill – create work, execute it, move on to create something new.”
That is best understood as a description of how he kept making things, not as a promise that self-directed work guarantees recognition or financial stability. His career involved shifting among creative forms; the interview does not suggest that every phase was easy or uncomplicated.

How did he move from theatre into films and songwriting?
Theatre and songs came first
Mishra’s Delhi years joined stage work with writing and composing. Some songs were connected to theatre before they reached wider audiences. “Ik Bagal,” for example, originated in a play in 1996, according to the Scroll interview. Its path illustrates how a song could begin in one setting and continue into other forms of performance.
His first film role
Scroll identifies Mani Ratnam’s Hindi film Dil Se (1999) as Mishra’s first film role. He was cast after a recommendation from dialogue writer and casting director Tigmanshu Dhulia. The account places the film opportunity within a career already shaped by theatre, rather than presenting it as the starting point of his creative life.

Writing for films and performing songs
Mishra’s songwriting and composition also became part of films including Gulaal (2009) and Gangs of Wasseypur (2012). The Scroll conversation discusses “Ranaji” from Gulaal and “Aabroo” from Gangs of Wasseypur, as well as “Ik Bagal.” Together, these examples show a practice in which songs could travel between theatre, film and performance.
What shaped Mishra’s songwriting?
Scroll described Mishra’s songs as often political, frequently humorous and marked by sadness. He told Ghosh that writing did not require a dramatic event or a particular muse: “There’s no rocket science behind it,” he said. “Just keep your eyes and ears open and you get a lot of stuff for songs. Politics has always been around. Left and Right have always been fighting. I don’t understand people who say they can’t write songs without a revolution, without a girl to inspire.”

His point was not that every song has the same subject, but that attention to ordinary life and public affairs can provide material. In this account, political observation is part of a broader habit of noticing, not a requirement to wait for extraordinary circumstances before writing.
“Arambh Hai Prachand” and later political use
Mishra said “Arambh Hai Prachand” was created for a college-election sequence. Scroll reported that groups across the political spectrum later used it as an anthem. Mishra also said in that interview that the rights belonged to Saregama and that he had not been asked before those uses. Those are his statements in the 2022 conversation; the article does not establish a single intended political meaning for every later use.

How did Mishra’s perspective change by 2026?
A later interview by The Kathmandu Post, published June 11, 2026, offers a different vantage point. Mishra described his artistic restlessness as having subsided, spoke about his autobiography, Tumhari Auqat Kya Hai Piyush Mishra, and said meditation and Vipassana had brought him peace. The later reflection does not erase the restless, multi-form working life described in 2022; it shows how he spoke about that drive at a later point.
In the Kathmandu Post interview, he also reflected on writing without over-planning: “I believe the pen should never be restrained. If you write with too much premeditation, it becomes problematic. One should write without inhibition and only consider editing or cutting text later.” He connected personal change to a broader idea: “Eventually, the revolution must become internal—a refinement of one’s own consciousness.” These remarks belong to his 2026 perspective, not the earlier Scroll interview.
What is Piyush Mishra’s autobiography called?
It is Tumhari Auqat Kya Hai Piyush Mishra. Scroll’s 2022 interview said it was to be published by Rajkamal Prakashan, while The Kathmandu Post referred to it as Mishra’s autobiography in 2026. Those interviews establish the title and publisher plan as reported at the time; they do not verify a currently available edition or its inventory.
