Pat Starace’s StarVent was a prototype designed to compress a bag-valve mask (BVM) with a single-cam mechanism. Make: documented the project as a maker build log in 2020—not as a clinical evaluation, a manufacturing specification, or evidence of FDA authorization.
What StarVent was designed to do
StarVent’s intended function was to automate compression of a manual resuscitator bag, also called a bag-valve mask. In the Make: build log, Starace described a single-cam mechanism driven by a stepper motor through an 8:1 gear ratio. The cam would press the BVM to deliver breaths.
Starace chose one cam rather than a dual-cam arrangement to reduce the number of moving parts. That is a documented design choice, not evidence that the single-cam approach was safer or performed better. The log records a prototype project, not instructions for building or using a device on a person.
How the prototype was put together
Mechanical parts and drive
The build log recounts laser-cut acrylic parts and assembly of the cam and shaft. Starace used a stepper motor and 8:1 gearing to drive the mechanism. These details describe the version in the 2020 account; they are not a validated engineering specification.

Controller and planned monitoring
The article identifies an ESP32 as the controller and describes planned controls for tidal volume and breaths per minute. It also describes a pressure-sensor alarm: a BMP180/280 sensor in a sealed housing positioned between the BVM and a manometer. The build log does not establish that the controls delivered accurate volumes or rates, or that the pressure monitoring and alarm were reliable enough for clinical use.
Build iterations
Starace reported wiring and programming the control panel, then troubleshooting the stepper driver. He changed to a driver that supported microstepping, printed nylon gears, and added silicone motor mounts in an effort to reduce vibration and noise. These are the maker’s reported iterations, not independently reproduced findings.

What the reported noise readings and cost estimate mean
Starace reported an initial sound reading of “78db” and a later reading of “58db” after the noise-reduction changes—a reported difference of “20db.” The figures came from an informal phone-app reading, not controlled acoustic testing, so they should not be treated as standardized measurements.
The same article gives Starace’s estimate that subsequent units might cost “$300 to $400.” It is a 2020 estimate, not a current price or a verified bill of materials.

What the build log does—and does not—establish
Dale Dougherty, the Make: author and interviewer, called it “yet another episode in his life as a maker.” Starace closed with: “All in all, this was a testament to perseverance and dedication and now this dream has become a reality.” Those lines capture the project’s maker-story framing; they do not report patient outcomes.
The article does not provide independent clinical results, validated ventilator performance statistics, or evidence that StarVent was tested for safe patient use. It also does not document a later commercial release. StarVent should therefore be understood as a historical prototype described in a build log, not a device readers can rely on for ventilation.

What the article says about FDA authorization
At the end of the 2020 article, Starace said he was unsure where the project would go and might apply for emergency-use FDA approval. That is a statement of possibility, not evidence that an application was filed or authorization granted.
The FDA’s ventilator and ventilator-accessory EUA materials describe authorization for specified devices that meet applicable safety, performance, and labeling criteria; publication of a design does not itself qualify a device. The FDA states that the COVID-19 ventilator EUAs will no longer be effective on December 26, 2026. Its COVID-19 ventilator guidance and FAQ likewise concerns defined regulatory responsibilities, not blanket approval of homemade or published designs. Neither source establishes that StarVent was included in an FDA authorization.
