Hannah Balanay is a Cebu-born creator who moved to Perth, Australia, in 2017 and became widely known for dance videos on TikTok. Her choreography to Dua Lipa’s “Don’t Start Now” spread internationally and was later featured in a Fortnite emote, while her follower figures remain date-specific snapshots rather than a live measure of her audience.
Who is Hannah Balanay?
Balanay grew up in Cebu in the Philippines. She moved to Perth, Western Australia, with her family in 2017 because of her father’s mining job, she told SBS Filipino in an interview published 18 July 2024 and updated 6 August 2024.
Dance was part of her life before it became a public calling card. She described making videos with friends in the Philippines when TikTok was still Musical.ly, then continuing to dance with friends after moving to Australia. “Dancing just came naturally to me, so it was something I liked doing for social media,” she told SBS Filipino. As her following grew, she said, her online presence became more public.
She also spoke about the difficulty of settling into a new country: “I had a hard time understanding people when they would talk to me.” That experience offers context for her move, but the sources do not establish that it directly shaped her choreography or online career.

How did Hannah Balanay become famous on TikTok?
SBS Filipino reported that Balanay’s TikTok career took off around 2020. Her choreography to Dua Lipa’s “Don’t Start Now” was a particular breakthrough: rather than simply appearing in a dance trend, she created a routine that other people learned and reproduced.
In January 2021, PerthNow reported that Fortnite had released an emote featuring her choreography. The outlet said the dance video had received more than 52 million views in the preceding year and that young people around the world were learning the routine. Those are historical figures and descriptions from the 2021 report, not current view totals or confirmation that the emote remains available in the game.

The Chartmetric figures come from a third-party analytics profile, not a live count verified directly on Balanay’s accounts. Its profile is titled “thexhan, Artist Stats, Streams & Social Analytics.” The different TikTok snapshots should not be treated as simultaneous or directly comparable: they come from different dates and sources, and counts can change.
These totals indicate substantial reach, but they do not reveal an audience’s location, age, or other demographic details. The evidence supports calling her audience global in the sense that her choreography was reported as being learned around the world; it does not establish a precise map or profile of that audience.

What happened to the “Don’t Start Now” dance?
Balanay’s original choreography circulated beyond her own videos. PerthNow’s January 2021 report connected the routine’s TikTok popularity to a Fortnite emote based on her dance. This is a reported past collaboration and a useful marker of how far the choreography travelled, not evidence of current availability in Fortnite or a physical product for sale.
What other projects and ambitions has she discussed?
PerthNow’s December 2021 profile reported that Balanay had collaborated with streetwear retailer Culture Kings on a capsule collection of bucket hats and with Pretzel on a signature baby-blue dessert. These are past projects; the report does not establish whether either is still available.

Music has also been an ambition, not a confirmed release in the cited coverage. In 2021, PerthNow reported that she hoped to enter music and release a song. In the 2024 SBS Filipino interview, she said she hoped to make her own P-Pop music and named BINI as an inspiration. The sources document those goals at the time; they do not confirm that a song was subsequently released.
