The competition used Mountain Ash rather than jarrah, prompting competitors to adjust their axes. The available event reports do not establish who won.
When and where was the 2024 Woodchop World Title scheduled?
The Perth Royal Show ran from 21 to 28 September 2024 at Claremont Showground in Claremont, Western Australia. PerthNow reported on 23 September that the Woodchop World Title fight was scheduled for Monday, 23 September, at 5pm in the Main Arena. That is the reported schedule, not confirmation of the actual start time or result.
The Royal Agricultural Society of WA’s 2024 competition schedule lists woodchopping events during the show and says the competition was conducted under Australian Axemen’s Association rules. The Main Arena title-fight time comes from PerthNow’s event-day report.
What timber did competitors chop?
The official 2024 schedule states: “Mountain Ash logs will be used in all events.” PerthNow described the timber as softer than jarrah and reported that competitors changed their axes in response. The change was attributed in that report to a shortage of native hardwood following bushfires and a halt to native logging; softer timber was expected to produce faster chopping times.

This was a change in the wood used, not a reported change to the competition’s governing rules: the schedule still specifies Australian Axemen’s Association rules. No consumer axe brand or model is identified in the event coverage.
Who was named among the competitors?
PerthNow named Victorian competitor Laurence O’Toole and local father-daughter team Tod and Molly Bergersen among those travelling to Claremont. The report does not provide a complete competitor list, so these names should not be treated as the full field or as confirmation that each competed in the title fight specifically.

What was at stake, and is the winner known?
PerthNow reported that more than $40,000 in prize money was on offer across the competition. It did not break that amount down by event or class. The cited event report and official schedule do not provide a World Title results table or identify the winner, so a winner cannot be named from these records.

The title fight was a scheduled feature in the Main Arena, alongside the broader woodchopping competition listed in the official schedule. The Claremont Showground’s historical event listing promoted the entire 2024 show as featuring more than 400 entertainers, 300 performances and 101 free things to see and do; these figures describe the full show, not the woodchopping program.
