An ABC News profile published in 2011 described an earlier acquaintance in the Hamptons, where both had homes. That account is distinct from McCartney’s recollection of the holiday encounter that led into their relationship; the earlier meeting is not confirmed in his account here.
When did they start dating?
The relationship began in 2007, but the exact month is not settled by the available accounts. CBS News reported in May 2011 that they had started dating in summer 2007, while McCartney’s official biography gives November 2007. On May 6, 2011, CBS News reported that McCartney’s publicist had confirmed the engagement to the Associated Press. The publicist did not provide details about the proposal, so the circumstances of how he asked Shevell are not established in that report. CBS News

In the same 2013 interview in which he described meeting Shevell, McCartney said “New” was about the two of them and that its middle section referred to when they met. The song connection is his own description of the track, rather than a date marker for the relationship. The Guardian interview
