Patti LaBelle celebrated turning 80 at a surprise party in New York on May 23, 2024, the night before her birthday. LaBelle spoke with Entertainment Tonight at the celebration on Thursday, May 23, 2024. The party took place in New York City, one day before her 80th birthday. Asked what turning 80 meant to her, she answered, “Just that I made it.” She also said, “Yeah, 80 is good.”

The occasion brought together friends from different parts of LaBelle’s show-business life. She later described it as a joyful night with people who enjoyed celebrating with her, including some she had not seen in 20 years. It had the feel of a reunion, though LaBelle did not describe it as an officially named reunion.
How did her son Zuri surprise her?
LaBelle explained the setup later in a conversation with Julia Louis-Dreyfus for Lemonada Media’s Wiser Than Me. She had expected a big birthday party and had already had a dress made by her friend Zane, but she did not know where the celebration would be or what her son had planned.

Zuri told her she needed to get dressed for a meeting with Walmart. LaBelle suspected the explanation was a cover story, but went along with it. He brought her to the party in New York, where her friends were waiting. As she recalled, “And then we went to the party. It was in New York, because I live in Philadelphia, and so I knew it was going to be a fabulous night.” The accounts do not identify the venue.
Who attended the celebration?
Entertainment Tonight reported that Whoopi Goldberg, Lee Daniels, Gladys Knight, and Debbie Allen were among the attendees, along with “many others.” Those names are a selection, not a complete guest list. LaBelle’s account of seeing friends she had not encountered in two decades gives a sense of the evening’s personal significance beyond its celebrity attendance.

What did LaBelle say about the album 8065?
At the party, LaBelle said she was working on an album called 8065. She explained the title as a combination of 80 years of life and 65 years in show business: “I’m 80 years young and 65 years in show business. So that’s what the project will be called, and that’s what my tour is called. 8065!” Entertainment Tonight reported at the time that the project was expected later in 2024. That May 2024 announcement documents her plans then; it does not establish the album’s later release or current availability.
