Papi Katsu’s “Midnight in Tokyo NYE” was a Tokyo-inspired New Year’s Eve party in Perth’s CBD, planned to welcome 2025. The December 2024 event report described a welcome cocktail, a multi-course banquet, a bottle of Howard Park Jete for each table of two, and a DJ from 9pm. It was a Perth celebration shaped by Tokyo nightlife—not an event in Japan.
What happened at Midnight in Tokyo NYE?
PerthNow reported on December 26, 2024, that Papi Katsu was preparing to host its first New Year’s Eve party, “Midnight in Tokyo NYE,” on December 31, 2024. The party was intended to welcome 2025. The report documented that event, not a recurring annual program or a later edition.
The reported package included:
- A hand-crafted cocktail on arrival.
- A multi-course banquet designed by chefs Chase Webber, Leigh Power, and Shane Middleton.
- One bottle of Howard Park Jete for each table of two.
- A DJ from 9pm.
PerthNow did not state a ticket price in the event details cited here. The inclusions and schedule should therefore be understood as the reported plan for that one New Year’s Eve, not current booking terms. PerthNow’s December 26, 2024 report provides the event account.
Why was it called “Midnight in Tokyo”?
The Tokyo theme referred to Papi Katsu’s atmosphere and inspiration. The venue is in central Perth, while its design draws on Japanese nightlife imagery, including neon and cyberpunk cues. Tourism Western Australia describes Papi Katsu as a subterranean izakaya with neon lighting and modern wooden furnishings; PerthNow’s June 2024 opening coverage also linked the restaurant’s concept to Tokyo nightlife and urban culture. “Transporting” guests to Tokyo was experiential framing, not a claim about the party’s location.

Co-owner and Sesh Mafia head of operations and beverage Eoin Kenny told PerthNow that “Midnight in Tokyo” was both an initial opening-party concept and the name of one of the venue’s signature cocktails. He said Tokyo’s neon lights and bustling character were an inspiration for what the team wanted to recreate in Perth. The party also served as a launch for Club Papi, a planned food, drink, music, and party concept. The December 2024 report said Sesh Mafia intended to roll it out during 2025; that statement does not establish what programming is in place today.

What the Tokyo-inspired setting does—and does not—mean
Papi Katsu’s identity combines Japanese-influenced hospitality with a Perth CBD location. Tourism Western Australia’s venue profile describes a subterranean izakaya, cyberpunk-inspired interiors, neon lights, modern wooden furnishings, Japanese-influenced food, and an extensive drinks list. Opening-era coverage in PerthNow described share-style dishes using seasonal and locally sourced ingredients, including Australian seafood, alongside Highball and Martini menus and sake. Those menu details describe the 2024 opening coverage, not a guaranteed current menu; consult the restaurant’s latest menu before deciding what to order.

For the New Year’s Eve event, the theme connected the banquet and music-led party atmosphere to Tokyo nightlife. It did not mean the venue was in Tokyo, nor does the historical report confirm that the same event or package returned in a later year.
