¿De qué cargos se declaró culpable Stephan Sterns?
En la audiencia del 21 de julio de 2025, Sterns se declaró culpable de 20 delitos sexuales relacionados con Madeline Soto, de 13 años. Respecto del cargo de asesinato en primer grado, presentó una declaración de no contest, no una declaración de culpabilidad.
La diferencia importa: según la explicación publicada por WKMG ClickOrlando, una declaración de no contest tiene consecuencias legales equivalentes a una declaración de culpabilidad, pero no constituye una admisión expresa de responsabilidad. Por eso, decir que Sterns “se declaró culpable de matarla” no describe con precisión lo ocurrido en el tribunal.
¿Qué sentencia recibió?
La Fiscalía Estatal del Noveno Circuito de Florida informó que Sterns recibió 21 cadenas perpetuas concurrentes y renunció a sus derechos de apelación. ClickOrlando informó que recibió cadena perpetua sin posibilidad de libertad condicional por el asesinato, además de penas de cadena perpetua por los delitos sexuales.

La cifra de 21 sentencias corresponde al comunicado de la fiscalía; la cobertura local describe 20 delitos sexuales y la pena por asesinato. La sentencia judicial completa no está entre las fuentes aquí citadas, por lo que no se debe inferir una distribución exacta entre cargos a partir de esas cifras.
¿Quién era Madeline Soto y cómo se desarrolló el caso?
- 26 de febrero de 2024: Soto fue reportada desaparecida después de no presentarse a la escuela.
- 1 de marzo de 2024: encontraron su cuerpo en una zona boscosa junto a Hickory Tree Road, cerca de St. Cloud, en el condado de Osceola, Florida.
- 24 de abril de 2024: Associated Press informó que Sterns había sido acusado de asesinato en primer grado.
- 21 de julio de 2025: Sterns presentó las declaraciones de no contest y culpabilidad, y fue sentenciado.
Las fuentes describen a Sterns como novio de la madre de Soto. No verifican que estuviera casado con ella ni que tuviera la condición legal de padrastro. La palabra del titular original, por tanto, sería imprecisa si se entiende como una relación legal confirmada.

Qué dijeron la fiscalía y la familia
La fiscal estatal Monique Worrell dijo en el comunicado oficial del 21 de julio de 2025: “Our office conducted a meticulous review of this case, and every step we took was in close consultation with Madeline’s family.” La fiscalía indicó así que el acuerdo se tomó en estrecha consulta con la familia de Soto.
Tyler Wallace, padre de Madeline, dijo a ClickOrlando durante la cobertura de la audiencia: “It doesn’t heal with time.” Su comentario expresa el impacto persistente de la pérdida, sin cambiar la distinción legal entre los cargos admitidos y el cargo al que Sterns no contestó.
