Who was Nikki Giovanni?
Giovanni was a major American literary voice associated with the Black Arts Movement, but her career reached well beyond any single movement or genre. She wrote poetry, essays and children’s books, taught for decades, and brought her poems to audiences through recordings and public performance. The Academy of American Poets and the Poetry Foundation describe a body of work shaped by Black life, political commitment, personal experience and a distinctive spoken voice.

Her own description of poetry offers a useful lens on that range. In liner notes for her recording Legacies, Giovanni wrote, “I think of poetry as being autobiographical.” Smithsonian Folkways preserves the statement alongside its account of her recordings.
How her poetry developed
Early collections and the Black Arts Movement
Giovanni’s early collections include Black Feeling, Black Talk and Black Judgment. They helped establish her as a poet whose work spoke directly to Black identity, community and political struggle. The Academy of American Poets notes that “Nikki-Rosa,” one of her best-known poems, first appeared in Black Judgment.

The poem’s attention to family memory and the gap between lived experience and outsiders’ assumptions illustrates why Giovanni’s work cannot be reduced to political declaration alone: the personal and political often meet in her writing.
Poetry beyond the early work
Giovanni continued publishing poetry and prose throughout her career. Her writing remained connected to questions of race, history, family, love and belonging, while its subjects and forms widened across books, classrooms and performances. In a biographical sketch quoted by the Associated Press, she set out a practical standard for a poem: “A poem has to say something. It has to make some sort of sense; be lyrical; to the point; and still able to be read by whatever reader is kind enough to pick up the book.”
Her work for children
Giovanni also wrote illustrated books for young readers. Among them is Rosa, her award-winning biography of civil-rights leader Rosa Parks. The book represents a distinct part of her literary life: an effort to bring consequential lives and history to children through accessible storytelling.

Teaching was a substantial part of Giovanni’s public and professional life, alongside writing and activism. Her poetry also reached listeners through recordings. Smithsonian Folkways documents three releases: The Reason I Like Chocolate and Other Children’s Poems (1976), Legacies (1976) and Cotton Candy on a Rainy Day (1978). These dates are release years; the catalog records the works but do not establish their present-day retail availability or format.
Rank #3
Performance was not incidental to Giovanni’s poetry. Her recordings preserve the spoken dimension of work created to be heard as well as read, extending its audience beyond the page.
