Erin Krakow says the atmosphere around When Calls the Heart helps explain why real-life connections have formed among its cast—but she described that as her impression, not proof that filming causes romance. In an April 2024 interview with PEOPLE, the show’s star spoke about the “magic” of fictional Hope Valley and the energy of Jamestown, British Columbia, where the series is filmed.
What Erin Krakow said about romance around the show
Speaking with PEOPLE reporter Esme Mazzeo ahead of the show’s season 11 premiere, then scheduled for April 7, 2024, Krakow offered a personal explanation for the real-life relationships associated with the cast. “I think there’s just always been a bit of magic in Hope Valley,” she said, linking that feeling to the show and its filming environment.
“There’s something so special about our show and the energy in Jamestown [British Columbia, Canada], where we shoot,” Krakow said. She recalled one production day when rain stopped in time for an exterior scene, but did not present the weather as evidence of anything beyond a memorable moment on set. “And I know that’s not the most romantic illustration of what makes Hope Valley magical, but I do think there’s just something special about the show and the people involved.”
Her broader point was about people spending time together: “When you put a bunch of special people together in one place, connections are bound to be made.” That is Krakow’s description of the atmosphere, not a measured claim that a television production creates romance.

Which real-life relationships were part of the April 2024 story?
PEOPLE described Krakow’s relationship with co-star Ben Rosenbaum as newly public after she posted about it on Instagram in February 2024. The interview also recalled that Kevin McGarry and Kayla Wallace made their relationship public in 2020 and announced their engagement in 2022.
The timeline moved on after the interview. In a report published September 17, 2024, Swooon said McGarry announced that he and Wallace were married during a Hearties Family Reunion panel on September 14. That later milestone should not be read back into Krakow’s April comments.

How the actors’ romances differ from the fictional story
The actors’ personal relationships are separate from the characters’ storylines. For example, a TV Insider excerpt published January 3, 2025 discusses the series’ season 12 return and the fictional relationship between Elizabeth and Nathan. Their story belongs to the drama; it is not evidence about the cast’s real lives.
