Purab Kohli played Akarsh Kapoor in Out of Love, the Indian adaptation of the BBC drama Doctor Foster. In interviews published in 2019 and 2021, Kohli described Akarsh’s infidelity, the moral reasoning he used to justify it, and how the character’s story changed in Season 2. He also named three earlier roles that stood out to him: Bakka in Jal, Ibrahim Durrani in Airlift and Munna in Awarapan.
Who does Purab Kohli play in Out of Love?
Kohli plays Akarsh Kapoor, a real-estate broker whose infidelity destabilizes his marriage to Meera Kapoor, played by Rasika Dugal. The five-episode series was presented as an Indian remake of the BBC drama Doctor Foster. Its story examines Meera’s response to the affair while gradually opening up Akarsh’s perspective.
That perspective matters to the performance: Akarsh is not simply a plot device whose actions are explained from the outside. Kohli described him as a man with his own logic, even when that logic is morally compromised.
How did Kohli understand Akarsh’s infidelity?
In a Scroll interview published December 5, 2019, Kohli described Akarsh as someone who enjoys life and is content as long as he is happy. Akarsh’s internal justification is that he can love two people at once. Kohli said he considered that reasoning wrong, but that Akarsh himself accepted it as sufficient grounds for cheating.

That gap between the actor’s judgment and the character’s self-justification was part of the challenge. Kohli said he struggled to find an acting rationale for a man who could see his belief in loving two people as an adequate excuse for betraying one of them. After discussing the role with director Tigmanshu Dhulia, he arrived at a different way into the character:
“After discussing with Tigmanshu, I realised the character is totally hollow from the inside.”

The line captures Kohli’s interpretation, not a neutral diagnosis of Akarsh. It gave the actor a way to play someone whose confidence in his own explanations did not necessarily amount to emotional depth.
Why did the mini-series format suit the role?
In a Cinema Express interview published December 11, 2019, Kohli said he was often offered positive roles and welcomed the chance to play a character whose moral complexity kept changing. He also described a practical advantage of the format: a mini-series gave the writers more room than a two-hour feature film to develop layers in a character.

More time, he said, did not mean the story could stop moving. The writing still had to keep each character’s development engaging. In Out of Love, the gradual shift in perspective helps viewers see more of Akarsh without turning the series into a simple defense of his choices.
What did Kohli say about Akarsh in Season 2?
Looking back in an interview with The Telegraph published April 28, 2021, Kohli described Akarsh’s story as expanding into a more complex, revenge-driven arc. He said the character’s journey changed sharply across the two seasons and that he enjoyed the broader trajectory in the Indian version. After the destruction Akarsh experienced in Season 1, Kohli found the later version of the character easier to approach.

In the same interview, Kohli explicitly separated the fictional husband from himself: the cheating husband in Season 1 was not him. He also said, in the context of discussing his own outlook, “I consider myself to be a very honest person now.” That is Kohli’s statement in that 2021 interview, not evidence about his private life beyond what he chose to say.

| Role | Project and year | What Kohli highlighted |
|---|---|---|
| Bakka | Jal (2013) | One of his few lead roles; he praised the film’s water-conservation subject and the experience of making it. |
| Ibrahim Durrani | Airlift (2016) | Named among his favourite roles. |
| Munna | Awarapan (2006) | A violent, volatile character Kohli described as a “total nutjob”; director Mohit Suri encouraged him to play the part broadly. |
Those choices span a socially themed drama, a large-scale historical thriller and a volatile villain role. Kohli’s description of Bakka points in particular to his appreciation of Jal’s water-conservation theme, while his recollection of Munna emphasizes the freedom to push a performance toward excess.
What else was Kohli doing around the series?
Coverage around Out of Love noted Kohli’s appearances in projects including Sense8, It’s Not That Simple and Typewriter. India Today also reported that he began acting in Zee TV’s Hip Hip Hurray, where he played Mazhar. Those credits provide context for the career behind the interview, but Kohli’s own comments about Akarsh and his favourite roles remain the clearest guide to how he viewed this particular performance.
