Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is a 2.5D action-adventure Metroidvania, not a return to the series’ older 3D format. Its case for players rests on the combination of demanding platforming, combat, exploration and time-based abilities, with optional navigation help and adjustable difficulty settings for those who want them. Critic excerpts indexed by Metacritic generally praise those core elements, though the available review sample does not establish a current aggregate score.
What kind of Prince of Persia game is The Lost Crown?
Ubisoft Montpellier developed The Lost Crown, which Ubisoft published. The US Ubisoft Store lists January 18, 2024, as its release date. Rather than continue the series’ older 3D action format, it reimagines Prince of Persia as a 2.5D action-adventure Metroidvania: players explore an interconnected world, return to routes made reachable by new abilities, fight enemies and solve puzzles.
The story follows Sargon, the youngest member of the Immortals, on a mission to rescue Prince Ghassan. Ubisoft says Persian history and mythology informed the setting, including Mount Qaf and its mythological figures. In Ubisoft’s development feature, series creator Jordan Mechner described the result as new while retaining the “Prince of Persia spirit.” That is a characterization, not independent review evidence.
What do reviews say about the combat, platforming and exploration?
Dated critic-review excerpts indexed on Metacritic lean positive about the game’s platforming, combat, progression, exploration and construction as a Metroidvania. The page includes reviews dated January 11, 2024, including Game Informer and PlaySense, as well as a Dexerto review dated February 2, 2024. Those examples indicate a favorable critical pattern in the cited coverage; they are not a complete measure of consensus or a current platform-specific score.

- The versatile Joy-Con offer multiple surprising new ways for players to have fun.
- Two Joy-Con can be used independently in each hand, or together as one game controller when attached to the Joy-Con grip.
- They can also attach to the main console for use in handheld mode, or be shared with friends to enjoy two-player action in supported games.
- Each Joy-Con has a full set of buttons and can act as a standalone controller, and each includes an accelerometer and gyro-sensor, making independent left and right motion control possible.
For players weighing whether the game suits them, the core trade-off is its emphasis on precision and challenge. Traversal, traps, combat encounters and bosses all contribute to the action. Ubisoft itself describes the game as challenging, while its accessibility documentation confirms that players can tune several combat and hazard settings rather than accept one fixed difficulty profile.
Movement and combat
Precision platforming and combat are central parts of the experience, alongside puzzles and bosses. The most useful comparison with another action-adventure or Metroidvania is therefore not simply how many areas or enemies it contains, but how much you enjoy mastering traversal and encounters. The available critic excerpts praise these systems, but the evidence here does not establish platform-specific performance or a hands-on assessment.

Exploration and returning to routes
Exploration is designed around finding routes and revisiting places that were previously blocked. If you like working out where to go next, that structure is part of the appeal; if backtracking or remembering a maze of paths frustrates you, the map tools may help. Ubisoft senior game designer Rémi Boutin says the optional guided mode shows objectives and blocked or available paths. The Eye of the Wanderer also lets players take a screenshot and pin it to the map as a visual reminder of a location or obstacle.
Can you adjust difficulty and accessibility?
Ubisoft’s accessibility article, published January 19, 2024, and updated August 28, 2024, documents four difficulty presets. The game displays the parameters affected by a preset, and individual settings can be changed at any time. Listed settings include enemy health and damage, environmental hazard damage, parry timing, dodge windows, Athra charge and depletion, melee targeting assistance, and aim assistance. This makes the challenge more configurable than a choice between fixed easy and hard modes.
